About me and my therapy practice

I offer a secure, confidential, non-judgmental space that my clients can use for helping them relate their emotional distress.  Through constructive feedback clients become more aware of their internal world and are helped to manage their anxieties better, gain perspective, feel more competent and freed up.  The process is collaborative between clients and myself where current concerns are listened to, and the past used to bring insight to the present.  The emerging narrative of life developments and patterns leads to understanding better what changes are necessary for moving forward.  This positive approach builds on existing strengths to increase motivation and confidence.

I draw on my extensive experience in university teaching in Canada, community social work in south London, and with Albany Trust (specializing in the wide spectrum of human sexuality).  A year's training in a Montreal psychiatric hospital has informed my awareness of mental health concerns.  I use my academic background in history and cultural studies in my  work.

My work as a psychosexual and relationship counsellor, and psychotherapist, is primarily psychodynamic and attachment based but incorporating other approaches as appropriate.  I work with sexual dysfunction, orientation and identity issues, and addictive types of sexual behaviour, informed by attachment and trauma perspectives.  My Jungian analysis has provided a foundation to my work, with the exploration of meaning, symbols, metaphor, mindfulness, dreams, creativity, and the transformation of anger and depression into the positive power for change within an increased capacity for loving and kindness.

Practice description

My practice is as above.  I offer a safe space and therapy on an on going, regular (at least weekly), and consistent way.  If we decide to work together you will be asked to sign a contract in order to signify your commitment to the work and having the therapeutic space reserved for you.  There is also a Privacy Statement to sign which underlines how I handle the confidential material you bring to me.

About me and my therapy practice

In my role as a supervisor I strive to build a creative, collaborative and mutual relationship with my supervisee that helps the client work to reflect these qualities.  With such a secure base it is possible to inquire into the therapeutic process in such a way as to embrace appropriate challenge, risk, honesty, strength through vulnerability, and the freedom to play with various perspectives on the dynamics, conscious and unconscious, present both in the client work and the supervisory encounter.  While it is always good to to hear what is going well in the therapy it is vital to have this quiet, safe, reflective and enjoyable space to talk about what seems difficult, concerns that mistakes have been made, and such feelings as hopelessness, being lost, and powerlessness.  It is in the working through of what is experienced as stuck that opens up the opportunity of growth and transformation.
