About me and my therapy practice

Hello.

My name is Jonathon Gadenne (he/him). I am a qualified and experienced integrative humanistic counsellor. I hold a BSc in Humanistic Counselling from Middlesex University and a Clinical Diploma in Humanistic Counselling from the Metanoia Institute.

I am a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and adhere to their Ethical Framework. This means that I work within their strict professional guidelines. I am a fully insured practitioner.

As well as my private practice, I have clinical experience in the NHS, offering solution-focused therapy via their iatpus program. I also have specialist training in bereavement and loss counselling and continue to work for an NHS hospice. I have further experience in supporting clients with mental health issues relating to addiction and dependency.

I strongly believe in the dignity of all human beings, based on respect and value for an individual’s human rights, cultural and social differences and beliefs. I have had the opportunity and privilege to work with a wide range of people, and continue to welcome clients of all ages, all genders, sexualities, religious beliefs, and minority ethnic backgrounds.

I take a special interest in LGBTQ+ issues, and how society constructs gender and influences behavioural expectations.

Practice description

The foundation of my approach is our therapeutic relationship, establishing and developing a meaningful bond, that’s is both non-judgemental and compassionate yet, robust enough to be honest and authentic, in order to grapple with difficult and uncomfortable issues or emotions. This happens at an appropriate pace that you can manage.

Working collaboratively, we will explore your subjective experience, and develop your self-awareness around the issues and problems that you are experiencing. We will consider past experiences to see if those ways of doing things are still useful today. Updating these strategies may be necessary for dealing with life in the here and now. Discovering and develop your personal strengths will help unlock your full potential and new possibilities and identify your own resources leading to autonomy.

As an integrative humanistic counsellor, I draw upon a wide range of psychological therapies so that my approach is tailored to your needs. I employ different modalities including, Transactional Analysis, Gestalt Therapy, and Person-Centred Counselling. These models are underscored by my belief in a holistic approach, of mind, body and spirit.

My first session

People seek therapy for many different reasons. You may feel lost, isolated or uncertain about where to turn, or you may recognise some kind of internal distress and want to break out of unhelpful repetitive patterns of behaviour but are unsure where to begin. Everyone is unique and life is challenging in its own way.

We all experience difficult periods in life. Perhaps anxiety, frustration, disappointment, and periods of sadness, anger and depression. Generally, these uncomfortable feelings are normal, healthy and useful, and can help motivate us to change, move forward, or address what is challenging us. However, difficulties can appear when we become overwhelmed, isolated, lost or stuck in our thoughts and emotions and they begin to impact on our quality of life.

I offer a safe and confidential therapeutic space for you to talk about any issues and concerns. Working collaboratively together, we can explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviours in order to gain greater insight and develop a better understanding of yourself.

I offer an initial 30-minute telephone or zoom consultation. Although this is not an assessment, it gives you the opportunity to discuss your needs and hear more about how I work. There is no charge for this service.

The initial assessment is a chance for us to meet face to face and think about how we might work together. You can tell me a little bit about yourself and explain what is on your mind. You may have already decided on a focus or goal for therapy, if not, this may also be the time to explore this.

Most importantly, it is your opportunity to consider if we are a ‘good fit’, and if you feel comfortable working together, as a good therapeutic relationship is essential to effective therapy.
