About me and my therapy practice

Hello my name is Hazel and I am a skilled and very experienced counsellor who has  been practising  in West Dorset for fifteen years. I provide safe, effective, professional support on a 1:1 basis for a whole range of issues including depression, anxiety, relationships - both personal and work related, self esteem, family issues, stress, anger management, abuse and trauma, bereavement and loss, dyslexia, ADHD and ASD ( and many others too).    My clients find me friendly, easy to talk to, non judgmental and empathic. I work both with adults of all ages and with young people. I am a humanistic integrative counsellor which means I work with you to provide a 'bespoke' service which will best promote your wellbeing and support you to make changes. I provide a strong therapeutic relationship to empower you to make lasting changes. I am passionate about the benefits of counselling and love the job I do!  I offer long and short term work depending on your particular needs and appointments are available during the day or in the evening. As well as my private practice I have worked for 10 years + as a volunteer counsellor for a local charity and have extensive experience working as a schools counsellor. I also deliver training courses to adults on counselling and mental health. I originally trained as a counsellor to further support my previous career as a specialist dyslexia teacher of young people and I have a good working knowledge of a range of learning difficulties. I am happy to offer a free 30 minute introductory session via Zoom  or WhatsApp video to new clients to discuss how counselling works , how I may be able to help and to answer any questions and queries.  Please contact me via BACP e mail and I will get back to you very quickly!

For local Dorset clients I am affiliated to The Dorchester Trust for Counselling and Psychotherapy and offer long term low cost counselling for people who would be unable to afford private therapy.

Practice description

My current clients range in age from 11 - 84  and  my counselling is mainly online .  I understand that you may be uncertain about working online and an initial 30 minute session will help you to decide whether or not online work is for you and may alleviate some of your concerns about virtual counselling.  STOP PRESS  I am able to offer some face to face appointments between January and April 2024. Although I work with a wide range of people and many diverse issues I do find that some of my clients choose to work with me either because of my teaching background or because of my knowledge of the challenges of dyslexia, ADHD and autism.   Additional Information: I am a qualified Practitioner of Creative Writing for Therapeutic Purposes and look forward to running workshops and courses in 2023/24 including a residential experience in Croatia. Please contact me to register interest. Therapeutic writing can be very effectively integrated into my counselling sessions if this would be of interest to you. ' Hazel is someone who is highly intelligent and empathic yet who has the necessary strength to create a safe emotional space where you feel ready to challenge yourself. This has made it possible for me to face truths, I have wasted years avoiding, which have fuelled my anxiety. When I accepted them not only did my anxiety abate, but in its place grew new faith in my ability to grow and change.'  ZW May 2022 ( after 6 sessions of counselling);  'Hazel's support for me through such a difficult time has been second to none' RQ April 2022;   'You were the lifeline I needed when I couldn't see a way out - you gave me the space and confidence to believe in myself and move on' LL March2023;  'Counselling has helped process and understand my mind and navigate forward, providing a safe space at a time that suits my needs. ' AB October 2023;  'This has been the best thing I have ever done' SD December 2023 ( after  6 sessions).

My first session

I offer a free 30 minute informal meeting via Zoom or WhatsApp video to help you decide whether I will be the right counsellor for you. This gives you the opportunity to find out about how counselling works and to ask any questions.  This meeting is not a counselling session but more of a friendly chat! (For local clients this initial chat can be face to face but please note that my face to face availability is from January to April 2024)

During our first counselling session we will work collaboratively establishing what you hope to achieve from counselling and starting to build that all important relationship.  Although counselling can be challenging my clients very often feedback about how positive they find this first session and that 'a weight has been lifted form their shoulders'.  Recent testimonials reflect the positivity of this first session: ' Within a few seconds of meeting Hazel I felt a surge of relief'. (ZW May 2022) 'From our very first meeting Hazel made me feel at ease' (LH May 2022)
