About me and my therapy practice

I enjoy working with Young People and Adults of all ages.

Working in education for the last 14 years with children, young people and parents/carers has given me experience and an interest in understanding the challenges of parenting, be it feeling overwhelmed or relationship issues.

I offer a calm, confidential and safe therapeutic environment. In providing empathy, respect, and a non-judgmental approach in our work together, I aim to build a trusting relationship which will enable you to talk about whatever is on your mind.

Traumatic experiences can leave emotional scars and fill you with anxiety and guilt, consuming your energy and leaving you struggling to cope with daily living, I will listen and support you to have difficult conversations; working through issues that are troubling you.

Developmental transitions and challenges happen throughout life and can cause lifestyle changes and low mood. As we mature counselling provides an opportunity to check in on your mental health and support your wellbeing.

Young people aged 11-18years, experience continuous physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development and growth at a time when their lives are full of uncertainty and expectations. They can become overwhelmed with feelings of anxiety, anger, confusion, isolation, loneliness, low self-esteem, worry and powerlessness. This can be occasional or ongoing.

My aim is to work collaboratively with the Young Person as they discover what is stopping them from living their best life and using a proactive approach, I sit beside them while they figure out what steps to take to make improvements in the quality of their mental and physical health. I support them to have a positive experience of counselling as they navigate an often-complicated journey towards a safe and happy adulthood.

Practice description

I work as a Person-Centred Counsellor and blend other modalities into the therapy, depending on what you want to achieve.

A Person-Centred Approach puts emphasis on the Counsellor listening in a way that lets you know you've been heard and that what you are saying, is of value. It is thoughtful and considered and because one approach will not suit everyone, by using different modalities I am able to tailor my responses to sensitively respond to your emotional state and inspire you to make connections with your beliefs and values to resolve your inner conflict.

I draw on different theories, the BACP ethical framework, self-awareness, and a range of skills to enable me to understand and respond to what is happening in the counselling session.

Whilst Counselling is a talking therapy, it can include opportunities to learn new strategies, including relaxation techniques and creative work to support your expressions in more fulfilling and powerful ways. This can be especially useful if a person finds it difficult to talk about their feelings and is coping by swallowing them down and bottling them up.

I will support you to understand, explore, challenge and cope with your emotions in the ways that you feel most comfortable with, so you are better equipped to manage your emotional life.

Counselling can make a world of difference to people's wellbeing and help with healing psychological pain.  Because I believe in what I do, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

My first session

I understand that coming to Counselling can be anxious making and that you may be nervous and worried about what’s going to happen. Counselling is an opportunity to share and express your feelings and emotions. I will support you to feel safe and comfortable and part of that is to be honest with you about what you can expect from our time together.

The first session gives an opportunity to:

• Find out what counselling can do and how I work

• Ask yourself if you believe we can work together to develop a trusting relationship

If you are satisfied and consent to Counselling, we can complete an agreement

Each Counselling session is different and individual for everyone, and you always have a choice in what you want to talk about and if you would like to do an activity, which can assist with expressing your emotions.
