About me and my therapy practice

I work relationally and creatively from within the humanistic modality (Drawing upon Gestalt, Person-centred and existential models amongst others- for those interested in such things!). I increasingly offer my therapy outdoors, not only because of covid 19, but because of the huge impact the environment has upon us, its importance in our wellbeing, and because of the ways it enhances the therapeutic work. My work is split between therapy, supervision (currently over zoom and outdoors) and training.

The purpose of my work is to bring about change – which allows people to be inspired, to have access to their own potential, to be able to express themselves fully throughout their daily lives and to grow to respect and be in tune with their environment. As such it is part of a much wider, far reaching vision. As individuals we have much to learn about ourselves through therapy – finding and developing our strengths, overcoming our wounds and history and learning how to gain fulfilment in our lives. Any changes which occur in the therapy room can have a pleasing cathartic effect, with great short term benefits, but of themselves are not likely to be of lasting worth unless they take into account your context (world), and are taken forth into your relationships, communities, and immediate environment. Doing this enables us to see that the benefits of our changes have a far reaching and spreading influence beyond ourselves, confirming that we have tapped into something deep and significant.

Practice description

I have been a qualified full time counsellor and psychotherapist for 23 years, in a wide variety of settings and working across different cultures. My approach is humanistic/gestalt, while integrating comprehensively other techniques from many disciplines, meaning that there are always many options available to make sure we work on your issues in the best way possible.

I have found that the way I work sensitively assists the client to get to the heart of the matter quickly, which means that we can spend more time working on the issues which matter. I work relationally, yet have a lot of experience working in different ways which can help you overcome different issues, using techniques from many different schools of counselling. However, these are only used where appropriate, and I am always fully open with you as to how I am working- there is nothing done secretively to you in sessions but the work is a collaboration between the two of us.

While I have worked with most issues and my specialism is people, I do have experience of working particularly with a few issues:- Autism and Autism with PDA, Crises of faith and people moving away from religion, Tinnitus, Loss of artistic creativity (writers block, loss of motivation for musicians/actors etc.), and our search for meaning (what is it about?). While these are my specialisms, I find it healthier and rewarding to work with all issues.

My first session

Usually during a first session, after taking a few brief details from you, we would spend the time talking about the issues which are of most concern to you. Often when presenting for therapy, either the issues have been around for quite some time and the pressure to explore them has been building up, or something difficult may just have happened. Either way, I provide a space for you to be able to discuss and explore what is of most concern to you, to lay out on the table all the different things you have been carrying, in order for us to be able to assess what will be most productive to work on further.

Most people find that after the first session, they feel some relief for having spoken about the things they have been carrying around with them. Usually they would also have made some insights into what the issues are about. I usually spend the last few minutes discussing how it has been for you visiting me, and if you think it will be worthwhile carrying on to explore the issues further, and we would make a plan to continue (if you feel this would be of benefit) usually for another 5 sessions when we would review your progress and see if you want to continue longer than that. I work usually between 6 sessions and 6 years, and everything in-between, depending upon what you are looking for from therapy- overcoming a particular problem or overcoming longstanding themes and issues in your life.

What I can help with

Abuse, ADD / ADHD, Addictions, AIDS/HIV, Anger management, Anxiety, Autism spectrum, Bereavement, Cancer, Child related issues, Chronic fatigue syndrome / ME, Cultural issues, Depression, Disability, Eating disorders, Health related issues, Identity issues, Infertility, Loss, Men's issues, Obsessions, OCD, Personal development, Phobias, Post-traumatic stress, Pregnancy related issues, Redundancy, Relationships, Self esteem, Self-harm, Service veterans, Sex-related issues, Sexual identity, Sexuality, Spirituality, Stress, Substance Dependency, Trauma, Women's issues, Work related issues

About me and my therapy practice

I am an experienced Counselling and Psychotherapy supervisor. I work relationally and holistically so can supervise practitioners within the humanistic and Integrative family:- Gestalt Therapists, Person-Centred counsellors, people working humanistically and relationally as well as Integrative practitioners. As well as supervising experienced practitioners I have also supervised counsellors and therapists in training, so understand the additional support and tasks involved with working supporting trainees. I offer supervision both face to face as well as over zoom. I also offer group supervision.

Practice description

Supervision is an activity that covers a lot of territory. You will be requiring support for your work, and as such may need assistance in making sense of theory, looking into aspects of practice and developing techniques which you can use, and occasionally need help in how to overcome ‘stuckness’. Additionally you will be practicing how to be supported to offer support to your clients, as well as exploring the therapeutic relationship you have with your clients and possible transference issues, and how this can be mirrored in the supervisory relationship too. Supervision is also about you, the practitioner and person, and exploring and uncovering the issues and aspects of you which are being stimulated through your client work or which old wounds are being opened up. I hope to offer a space where you can bring your best and your worst, and for it to be a supportive, growthful and challenging space where you can really develop your therapeutic practice.

My first session

In the first session, as well as attending to any immediate supervision needs you may have, we will also be paying attention to whether we both feel that our working relationship has what is required for us to work in a more ongoing manner. It is important to give space to this, and for us to explore how we feel the supervision relationship is developing, as this is key to it being a successful supervision relationship.
