About me and my therapy practice

You will be met with:

A safe and suportive environment.

Warmth and compassion

Confidentiality and no judgement.

Support to build trust whilst gently challenging thoughts that interfere.

Respect and acceptance.

I have worked for over 30 years; 26 professionally, with families and individuals, including in statutory agencies; education, health, social care and the voluntary sector.

Qualifications:

BA Hons in Humanities,

DipSw BPhil,

Foundation in Family Therapy,

Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy Levels 1 and 2,

Adv Diploma in Integrative Counselling.

I have built up extensive knowledge and understanding of the impact of life’s difficulties including developmental trauma, separation and loss. Whilst I only work with individuals, each one of us is in relationship with others in some way, When I meet with you I am interested and curious about you, but also interested in the other people in your life, and any impact from outside of your social and family circle, such as work.

The exploratory and supportive process of counselling can help clear the wood from the trees, unravel patterns of behaviour and help to make changes in your life. My purpose and hope will be that you can develop and grow in confidence.

Practice description

My counselling approach is Integrative which means I do not adhere to or use one theoretical model or approach. The most important theoretical informant for me however, is Attachment Theory, I am therefore interested in, and curious about your early relationship experiences.

I do not offer advice or make decisions for you, or about your difficulties, but I will help you explore the thoughts and feelings you are having and help you think about choices and to be curious. You will have my full attention and interest.

I prefer to arrange weekly sessions as I find this sets up a rhythm to the therapy and I find it also offers some security and predictability.

I tend to work open ended and in the longer term, though not exclusively so. For me the therapeutic relationship is the most important part of working together.

Counselling is not magic, there are no tricks. I suggest thinking of it as engaging in a therapeutic conversation. Laughter is allowed and does happen.

I use a room in a wellbeing centre in Chudleigh. There is unfortunately, no wheelchair access. There is some street parking and a reasonably priced car park within easy walking distance.

My first session

I offer a 15 min telephone or video conversation after the initial contact (this is free), during which you can give me a brief idea of what it is that brought you to make this decision without going into any depth. Or you can book an initial session for the full hour at full fee which is an opportunity for us to meet and you can get a sense of how sessions work and we can get a sense of each other. We can take things from there.

Whilst the first session is usually about asking what you would like to talk about in therapy, taking a personal history and discussing bureaucratic issues such as fees, cancellation policy and out working contract, I have also found that for some, the relief of taking this step is so big that there a strong need to just off load; and that is fine.

It is really important that you feel you have the right therapist for you.
