About me and my therapy practice

SPECIALISMS

Divorce Coaching

I'm a qualified solicitor who ran her own successful family law practice for many years. Now retired, my knowledge of how exes behave when relationships breakdown and my understanding of the legal system is invaluable. Although I do not offer legal advice, I understand how to support you when in the throes of acrimony over finances or arrangements for the children. You won't have to go through this scary experience alone.

I am qualified to work with the psychological impact of the breakdown of your relationship, I'll help you think straight, redraw boundaries and rebuild your confidence and sense of self.

Relationship Therapy

Struggling in relationship with your intimate partner?

Stuck in a cycle of connection, disconnection and reconnection?

Considering whether you should stay or separate?

Whether as a couple or individually, I am ideally placed to help you work out your future path and transform stuck thinking.

If you are looking to separate, I can help to mediate the split as painlessly as possible

Neuro-Affirming Therapy

I identify as a neurodivergent therapist. Many of my clients are autistic, ADHD or otherwise neurodivergent. I don’t see neurodivergency as a disorder, but a different operating system, with sensitives which can make day to day life a challenge.

Whether you are diagnosed, self-identifying, waiting for an assessment, or questioning if you are neurodivergent, I can work with you in an individualised, affirming and holistic way, helping you to navigate living in a world that does not always make sense or sends you out of your comfort zone.

We can explore sensory issues, difficulties connecting with others or burnout and experiment with different ways of coping, and practical new skills.

I can also support partners, parents and carers of autistic individuals.

Young People & Emerging Adults

I have an Advanced Certificate in Children & Young Person's Therapy and use my skills to work with young people 16 years+.

Practice description

My Credentials

I'm a qualified lawyer and an established, accredited psychotherapist with over three decades experience in the field, initially as a mental health and family solicitor, and since 2006, a therapist.

I have experience and advanced training in providing therapy for individuals, couples and young people (16 years+) and working online as a therapist.

How I Work

I love to work online with clients, so if you are physically distant from my office, you can experience therapy with me from the convenience of your own home, maybe in your PJs, with a hot drink in hand. Or we can meet whilst you are at work or walking in the park, as long as you can find privacy. Research shows that online therapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy and has significant benefits.

I use evidence based therapies like humanistic person-centred therapy, attachment theory, neuroscience, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing and Mindfulness to formulate a therapy that's most beneficial to you.

I am affirming of, and have lived experience of the LGBTQ+ community, queer and same sex relationships.

Other Relevant Experience

As a retired solicitor with a Master’s degree in mental health law, I was accredited by the Law Society in mental health law and child protection law, and recognised as an expert in these fields.

I worked in the High Court, secure forensic mental health settings and prisons, and have expertise and knowledge of complex situations beyond that of most other counsellors. I have worked with people with extreme and dangerous behaviours as a result of their traumas and psychological ill health. Nothing about the human condition surprises me and I am exceptionally non-judgmental and validating.

My first session

I believe every individual is unique, so I offer a 50-minute "taster" session for new clients. This initial meeting gives us an opportunity to see if we're a good fit, for me to learn more about you, what has brought you to counselling and how I can help.

With young people, I will speak to the referring parent or caregiver initially to explore the issues before deciding how to proceed in session.

I get that talking about your unspoken worries can be daunting, especially if you have never had therapy before.

I will listen to your story, ask relevant and curious questions, explore with you how to make sense out of your life, your hopes and your goals and collaborate with you about what you'd like to change. I am not here to advise or influence your beliefs, choices, or decisions. I see my role as accompanying you to find your own solutions.

I'll help you dispel any shame or embarrassment and put you at ease. I'm warm, compassionate and wisdom and humour. We'll tease out the difficult stuff and you'll gain insights into your psychological process that you're unaware of, so you can stop repeating unhelpful patterns.

After the first session, if we choose to work together, there are no set number of sessions. I offer weekly counselling that lasts as long as you need it and I offer both short-term and long-term therapy, as you prefer. I am committed to working with clients to achieve their goals as quickly and sustainably as possible.

If my experience or our availability doesn't match, I know a wide network of other therapists whom I can refer you on to, so you don’t have to start your search from scratch.

About me and my therapy practice

How I Work

I’m an established accredited psychotherapist with 30 yrs experience in the field, initially as a mental health and family solicitor, and since 2006, as a psychotherapist.

As well as working with individuals, I have additional formal training in providing therapy for couples and young people (16 years+).

I will listen to your story, ask relevant and curious questions, explore with you how to make sense out of your life, your hopes and your goals, and collaborate with you about what you'd like to change. I am not here to advise or influence your beliefs, choices, or decisions.

I love to work online with clients, so if you are physically distant from my office, you can experience therapy with me from the convenience of your home, maybe in your PJs, with a hot drink in hand. Or we can meet whilst you are at work or walking in the park, as long as you can find privacy. Research shows that online therapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy and has significant benefits.

I have a special interest in working with clients who are exploring their neurodivergency, or already or late-diagnosed and needing extra support.

I also offer outdoor therapy (subject to assessment) or walk and talk therapy.

I use evidence based therapies like humanistic person-centred therapy, attachment theory, neuroscience, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, motivational interviewing and Mindfulness to formulate a therapy that's most beneficial to you.

I am affirming of, and have lived experience of the LGBTQ+ community, queer and same sex relationships.

Other professional expertise

I am a retired solicitor with a Master’s degree in mental health law and specialisms in family law and child protection. I advocated for clients in the High Court, secure mental health settings and prisons for many years, and have expertise and knowledge of complex circumstances beyond that of many other counsellors. Nothing about the human condition surprises me. I am exceptionally non-judgmental and validating.

Practice description

Psychotherapy

Life is complex and we all face difficulties. My belief is that psychological 'symptoms' such as depression, anxiety or addiction are ways we have learned to deal with these problems.

Good therapy will help you explore how these strategies evolved and learn new ways of coping. I will support you to understand yourself better and build on your strengths for positive change and growth.

OTHER SPECIALISMS

Relationship Therapy and Divorce Coaching

Struggling in relationship with your intimate partner, stuck in a cycle of connection, disconnection and reconnection: considering whether you should stay or separate? I am ideally placed to help you explore your feelings and options and help you develop your relational intelligence.

If you want to come along as a couple, I can work with you both.

Although I do not offer legal advice, as a retired solicitor, I understand the legal process and this knowledge is invaluable if you are going through a separation or divorce and perhaps dealing with arrangements about the children of a partnership.

Unlike your lawyer, I am qualified to work with the emotional and psychological impacts of the breakdown of a relationship, aiming to prevent unnecessary conflict whilst learning to redraw boundaries and your sense of self.

Neuro-Affirming Therapy

I identify as neurodivergent and many of my clients are autistic, ADHD or otherwise neurodivergent. Neurodivergency isn't a disorder, but a different neurotype, which can make day to day life a greater challenge.

Whether diagnosed, self-identifying, waiting for assessment, or questioning potential neurodivergency, I can work with you in an individualised, affirming and holistic way, helping you to navigate living in a world that does not always make sense.

We can explore sensory issues, difficulties connecting with others or burnout. We can experiment with different perspectives, and practical new skills.

I can also support partners, parents and carers of autistic individuals.

My first session

I get that talking about your unspoken worries can be daunting, even if you've had therapy before.

If you are not feeling okay in your life, studies, job or relationship, recovering from a recent trauma, or still troubled by past experiences, you know you need support to make changes.  You probably find it really difficult to sit with uncomfortable emotions like sadness, anxiety or resentments - and that's where I can help.

Unlike talking to your friends or family, I am impartial and trained. I believe you are the best authority on your life, so I won't try to influence you or advise you, though I may be able to see things differently and offer you alternative perspectives.

There’s no need for shame or embarrassment. I work with compassion, wisdom and humour. I will put you at ease whilst teasing out the difficult stuff and offer you insights into your psychological process that you may be unaware of, so you can stop repeating unhelpful patterns.
