About me and my therapy practice
Taking a step to help yourself is daunting. I welcome you to contact me for a free 20-minute no-obligation enquiry to discuss your difficulties.
I am a highly experienced and award-winning therapist with a successful career spanning 8 years. I’ve delivered over 5000 hours of Counselling, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Mindfulness to people like you, in the NHS, charity and private sector, and I’m featured in many media outlets as an expert.
Helping you navigate suffering is tremendously important to me because, like you, I know what it's like to suffer. I've dedicated my life to helping people overcome what life throws at them.
- In my youth I was a successful athlete, travelling the world for Great Britain in the sport of Olympic Weightlifting.
- In 2009, I was in a severe road traffic accident where I fractured my spine and broke my leg, ending any future of a sporting career.
- Soon after this, I began experiencing panic attacks and was told I was suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder by a psychiatrist who recommended I go to therapy and start taking medication.
- In therapy, I discovered that the accident was just one of a collection of traumas I was struggling with.
- After about a year of talking therapy and mindfulness, I recovered, stopped medication, began travelling the world, delved into philosophy and self-help books, and started attending silent meditation retreats.
- I eventually returned to the UK, put my passion into practice and trained as an accredited Mindfulness teacher and a registered Counsellor and Psychotherapist, for a total of 5 years in training.
- Meanwhile, I worked in elderly care, in-patient psychiatric wards, clinical research and the NHS where I won a regional award.
- I now have a private practice, volunteer in the charity sector facilitating a therapy group for fathers whose children have died, and conduct research at the University of Salford.
See my website's 'about' page for a detailed version of this with photos and videos.
Practice description
As an experienced therapist, you learn that each person is different and what they need changes over time. That’s why I am trained in multiple approaches, and I pride myself on adapting to your needs. Along with the experience from delivering thousands of hours of therapy, I offer the following:
Counselling - is a talking therapy where you experience what it’s like to have a professional truly in your corner, accepting you completely, and helping you understand and navigate your difficulty.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy - is a talking therapy where together we analyse your thoughts, feelings and behaviours and I offer tools and solutions that can be applied to your life with immediate effect.
Mindfulness - is a practice that I teach you, often following a course that has been refined for over 30 years, where you learn how to be present, connected to the world, and unhook yourself from unhelpful habits of thinking, feeling, relating and behaving.
Business mentoring - is where I use psychological expertise to help professionals overcome the barriers towards achieving specific personal and career goals.
Sessions are 60 minutes long, a full hour and I see a maximum of 5 people per day.
I offer face-to-face sessions out of a private therapy space at the Royal Exchange, in Manchester, as well as online and telephone sessions from Tuesday to Friday.

My first session
"James has been an invaluable asset to me as a barrister navigating through emotionally charged cases. Amidst the demanding pressures of my profession and the complexities of personal life, James has provided a safe space for introspection and reflection. His insight and guidance have helped me untangle my thoughts, making the challenges of life and work more manageable.
Knowing that James is accessible for sessions during tough times is immensely reassuring. His approachable demeanour, personable nature, and the comfortable environment he fosters have made every session productive and enriching. Prior to working with James, I had never explored therapy, but his expertise and support have made me feel no need to seek further - he has exceeded what I thought therapy could achieve for me. I highly recommend James to anyone seeking a skilled and person-centred therapist."
- Michael, Profession: Barrister. 24/02/2024
“I have worked with James for almost a year and he has been a key part of my progress in overcoming past trauma. Every session felt safe and comfortable which allowed me to talk more freely about my experience. It was extremely important to me that I was in a safe environment and felt heard. James has helped with the confidence I had lost and I have seen a huge improvement in my overall wellbeing. Going to therapy was one of the best decisions I made and I’m glad James was my therapist.”
