About me and my therapy practice

I help people who have experienced problematic relationships or difficult life events and work with them to process and understand what has happened along with the impact it has had. This could be something that has happened recently or something from the past that has been affecting you for a long time. Difficult emotions such as shame, guilt or regret can accompany these experiences. You might be feeling desperate or that you have let yourself or other people down. You might just be feeling bad about yourself but are struggling to understand why. Counselling can help. Just talking is therapeutic in its own right and being supported to find your own answers can be both transformational and empowering; it can help you to feel better.

Practice description

I offer a non-judgmental and respectful safe space where you can discuss whatever is on your mind. This could be something you are struggling to deal with or something about yourself that you find difficult and would like to explore.

My core training is in person centred therapy but I also have some training in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), compassion focused therapy (CFT),  solution focussed brief therapy (SFBT) and counselling for domestic abuse.  These can be utilised as part of the therapy if they are helpful to you, for example, if you have a very specific issue or experience you would like to address or are just feeling generally stuck or lost in your situation.

As a person centred therapist my role is to listen to what's going on for you, understand your personal perspective and work with you to find a way forward. I won't give you advice or tell you what I would do in your situation; I want to hear and understand how things are from your perspective.

I have experience working on a specialist services to support people who have experienced domestic abuse but also have experience working with general counselling clients with a wide range of issues. I have experience of time limited or short term counselling support but have also worked with longer term and open ended counselling interventions. In addition to this, I have a long history working in post 16 education as a lecturer and ran my own small business for over 25 years.

About me and my therapy practice

Training as a supervisor felt like a logical next step that allows me to utilise the skills I developed as an educator into my counselling practice. I am trained in the seven eyed model of supervision which provides a structure that focuses on:

The client

The interventions used

The relationship between the client and therapist

The therapists process

The supervisory relationship

The supervisors process

The wider context of the work

Practice description

The value of a shared experience and a different perspective is something I have personally appreciated and benefitted from throughout my training and work as a therapist. This includes supervision groups and one to one support with both peers and qualified supervisors. I consider supervision to be a working relationship that supports personal growth as well as professional development. I am interested in the human experience of our work as therapists as well as effective professional practice and upholding of standards, all of which I bring to my role as a supervisor.

As a therapist my core training is in person centred therapy and my supervisory style reflects this. I also have some training in other approaches, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), compassion focused therapy (CFT), solution focussed brief therapy (SFBT) and counselling for domestic abuse. My client work includes specialist counselling for domestic abuse but I also work with general counselling clients and a wide range of issues. I have experience of time limited or short-term counselling support but have also worked with longer term and open ended counselling interventions. In addition to this, I have a long history working in post 16 education as a lecturer and also ran my own small business for over 25 years.
