About me and my therapy practice

  • Non-directive
  • Non-expert
  • Non-judgemental
  • Non-medicalised

I'm not trying to fix you or diagnose you. I think that the best solutions for you are ones that you find within yourself, for yourself.

The goal of therapy is to help you understand yourself. An excellent way to do that is to explain how things are for you to someone who listens in a supportive and judgement-free fashion.

I only ask questions about things I don't understand that seem important for you for me to understand. When you're explaining them (because you're the only person who can be an expert on you) you may well experience insight about who you are and what the nature of the problem you are dealing with is.

A frequent side-effect of understanding yourself and feeling understood is that you may well feel better, but that's not my goal and not something I can guarantee.

My expertise lies in creating a safe-space. A place where you can think and speak and really be yourself. I don't mind swearing or if you don't express yourself as well as you like. I value authenticity in myself and I would love for you to be able to be authentic as well.

As a non-directive therapist I neither want, nor expect, you to re-traumatise yourself by making you talk about things you don't feel comfortable talking about. They're your boundaries and I respect and affirm them. When you're ready, you're ready and I'll be here for you.

Practice description

All sessions can be done either online or face-to-face via walking and talking or via the telephone.

A session starts with me greeting you and asking what's on your mind. How it goes from there is up to you and what's bothering you either long term or short term.  Towards the end of the session I give you a time warning to let you know that the end is approaching.

For Single Session Therapy, we agree what you'd like to focus on and how and when I should interrupt you if you need it to focus on the thing that you need to think about.  You do not have to tell me what it is that is bothering you, it's how you feel about it that really matters.

A typical example would be if you were considering helping a parent move into a nursing home or whether they should stay in their family home.  This is a very distressing situation with a lot of emotion, but with support you can think your way through and find the best solution for all involved.
