About me and my therapy practice
Hello. My name is Stephen, and I am a fully qualified, professional psychodynamic psychotherapist, accredited by the United Kingdom Council of Psychotherapists (UKCP), and the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP), working to their codes of ethics.
The terminology of therapy is often confusing, but the way I work means that: although whatever has brought you to therapy is manifesting itself in your day to day life, behaviours, thoughts and feelings, I believe that it's roots could be in your past, possibly as far back as early childhood.
Starting in therapy can be intimidating, but it doesn't have to be. I offer a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space to explore with you. I want to collaborate with you, for us to work together to really try and understand your thoughts, feelings and experiences, and help you move forward.
Perhaps you are feeling anxious, or are experiencing low mood. Maybe you have experienced a trauma, or are dealing with a lot of stress. Your relationships could be better, or you might want to make sense of your life so far. You might have suffered a loss, or simply feel that something isn't quite right, and that you need some help and support. These are just some of the presenting problems I can work with, and there are many more.
People come to therapy, amongst other things, for:
Anxiety
Depression or low mood
Stress
Trauma
Abuse
Loss, bereavement or grief
Relationship issues
Low self esteem
Work related issues
Self harm and suicidal ideation
Anger management
LGBTQ+ issues
Addiction
Insomnia
Sex issues
There are just some of the issues I am able to work with. Please get in touch to discuss how I can help.
Practice description
Health Village Esher is a community of independent healthcare providers. I work from comfortable, well lit rooms.
I am warm, supportive, non-judgemental and empathetic.
I work with adult clients across a wide variety of issues.
My first session
I offer a free, no obligation telephone call, usually ten minutes or so, to understand a bit about you and what's been going on, and also to allow you to ask any questions you may have. From there, I conduct an initial consultation, up to 90 minutes in length, to gain an understanding of your life and history. At that point, if we both feel that we can work together, we establish a regular, weekly appointment, either in person, online or over the telephone, and we begin.
Usually, I work in what's known as 'open-ended' fashion. This means there is no finish date in mind, and it allows for deep exploration and understanding. I can also work in what is called a 'time-limited' approach - usually 12 sessions, and focused on a specific issue. Sometimes people like this to get a taste of what therapy is like.
I am able to work with clients who have private health insurance, including providers such as Aviva, AXA Health, Cigna, Nuffield Health, Vitality and WPA.
If you feel that I might be able to help you, please do get in touch via email on: stephen@thepsychotherapistlondon.com, or message me on here. I look forward to hearing from you.
