About me and my therapy practice

I approach my client work with warmth, empathy, and openness, which are qualities that have been vital in my work as a secondary school teacher over the past two decades. I became interested in counselling training at the start of my career, and my early counselling studies complemented my teaching and pastoral roles in schools working with teenagers, young adults, and their families.

I work with adolescents (16+ yrs) and adults of all backgrounds, ages, and life experiences either in person at Maritime Street Therapy in Leith, Edinburgh, or online via Teams.

My aim is to enable clients to talk about things that can’t easily be shared and explored with others. With empathy and non-judgement, I offer you the space to speak about whatever is troubling you. When relevant, we will consider past experiences and relationships; how they have shaped you; and how they influence your feelings, actions, and motivations in the present. Through collaborative working, you will gain a better understanding of yourself – your feelings and your relationships – which, in turn, will facilitate personal growth and change.

Practice description

I work with the belief that you have the tools within yourself to change and transform, and that through the empathic listening and support of a trusted counsellor or therapist, you can find the words to express difficult feelings and experiences – both past and present – without fear of judgement. Through collaborative working, you will come to a better understanding of your current feelings, relationships, and behaviours, and how they may be shaped by your past experiences. I have experience of working with older adolescents (16+ yrs) and adults struggling with anxiety and depression; with those who have suffered loss and are bereaved; and with individuals who have suffered trauma and relationship difficulties.

I studied psychodynamic theory and practice at Human Development Scotland (formerly the Scottish Institute of Human Relations), and I hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Human Relations and Counselling awarded by Robert Gordon University Aberdeen. I am a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy – BACP – and I abide by their ethical standards and code of practice.

My first session

I offer a reduced-rate initial appointment (£35 for 50 minutes), which is an opportunity for us to meet and for you to ask questions and visit the therapy space to establish whether I am the right therapist for you.

I offer weekly daytime or evening sessions in person at Maritime Street Therapy in Leith, online via Teams, or over the phone. I aim to arrange appointments for new clients within a week of an enquiry.

If I can’t help you, I will endeavour to refer you to another therapist.
