About me and my therapy practice

My name is Austen and I provide Psychotherapy to individuals & couples in Manchester and Online.

In addition to supporting people with more general problems such as depression, anxiety and relationship difficulties, my particular skill is helping clients to process sensitive or embarrassing issues.

Since qualifying as a therapist in 2011 I have undertaken further training in Trauma, Emotional Regulation and Sexuality related problems.

My specialist areas are; Anxiety, Low Self-Esteem, Sexual Abuse, Sex/Porn Addiction, Erectile Dysfunction, Kink-Related Shame and conflict within relationships.

Many of my clients have previous experience of therapy and are seeking a therapist with specific skills and a therapeutic approach that is focused. I'm Gay and my clients are heterosexual and LGBT+.

I offer a therapeutic relationship that is confidential, respectful and supportive where you can talk openly about your experiences and feelings without being judged.

Together, we will have opportunity to sensitively explore, understand and process what is troubling you. After therapy, you are likely to feel a sense of change, relief, resolve and resilience.

I started therapy with a specific goal of stopping my sex addiction. Austen helped me achieve this much quicker than I expected. I didn't anticipate that therapy would also be a completely life changing process: I now understand myself and my emotions and I have the tools to cope with life. The experience was phenomenally life changing" (Client's words)

"I had social anxiety for decades; I used to feel terrifically awkward and scared interacting with people, especially those I didn't know very well. I'd scan their responses, waiting for them to say something dismissive to me. Now, after therapy, I'm almost surprised and proud to say most, if not all of my social anxiety has gone. I feel calmer and more confident being myself." (Client's words)

Practice description

I am a BACP registered, accredited therapist with a Master's Degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy.

My main therapeutic approach is Emotion Focused Therapy which supports you to regulate painful emotions such as shame, anxiety, anger and loneliness.

My secondary approach is Brainspotting (related to EMDR) which regulates the nervous system and is effective at treating PTSD.

I am also qualified in Traumatic Incident Reduction, Behavioural Activation and Motivational Interviewing.

My first session

If you are are considering having therapy sessions with me and would like further information, you can request a free, confidential fifteen minute Zoom or telephone session so I can answer any questions you may have.

If you decide to start sessions, the first meeting will involve setting out and agreeing how we will work together. This includes, for example, clarifying confidentiality and discussing how therapy works. Sometimes people have a sense of what they want to achieve (Aims/Goals); however, many simply feel that 'something is not quite right' in their lives and want to be happier or more fulfilled.

It's very important that you feel secure with your therapist. This is why there is an emphasis on fostering a trusting therapeutic relationship in which you feel safe, respected and able to express yourself freely.
