About me and my therapy practice

I provide specialist counselling anxiety, stress and burnout in midlife.

If you you are struggling with issues around midlife, self esteem, self confidence or a sense of stagnation, you are not alone.

Growing older in our society is not fun. It is easy to feel that you have lost your way in life. We are bombarded with negative images and messages around aging, however, we don't have to buy into this damaging (and outdated) image of midlife and beyond. I do know this is easier said than done, but it is possible to celebrate and enjoy being an mature adult.

In “The top five regrets of the dying”, Bronnie Ware, a palliative nurse, lists the number one regret of people on their death bed as “I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.” This is a tragedy and I am committed to helping my clients find ways to live a full authentic life on their own terms.

A bit about me, prior to qualifying as a counsellor in 2013, I spent twenty years in management in universities. I also had a brief spell in the pharmaceutical industry and I gained a management qualification along the way. It was only when I became a therapist and made other big changes to my own life that I truly started to love my life and my work.

Since qualifying, I have worked in local and national charities, a university and for a couple of private therapy businesses. I am particularly proud to have worked for NAPAC, the National Association for People Abused in Childhood.

Practice description

What can you expect from me? I am an experienced and qualified counsellor. I am an accredited therapist with the BACP. The accredited status is awarded to experienced therapists who have successfully undergone a rigorous assessment process focusing on counselling practice, professional development and ethical thinking.

I am qualified in person centred counselling, this means I believe that given the right conditions, anyone can reach their full potential and become their true self and I will work with you to facilitate this transformation.

I am trained and I use a variety of other therapeutic approaches, in particular a way of working known as ACT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. The aim of this approach is to help you live alongside the full range of your thoughts, feelings and emotions more easily, allowing you headspace to discover and focus on what you value in life. It is a form of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

My first session

Before we meet I will ask you to complete a short form giving some basic details and I will invite you to a complimentary 15 minute video or phone call. This call is important as it allows us see if we both feel we are a good fit and we can work together. Research has show that clients benefit most from therapy where they feel understood and there is a good relationship with their therapist.  I would urge you to meet a few therapists before choosing one to work with.

How therapy progresses varies tremendously from one person to another, but typically our sessions might work as outlined below:

Our initial sessions will usually focus on what has brought you to therapy at this point in your life.

In subsequent sessions, we will look at what life is like for you now and identify the main issues you are facing at work and in your personal life, as well as examining how your feelings and emotions are affecting you.

Armed with this knowledge, we will work to identify what is important to you and gain clarity about your values. We will then examine your professional and personal life against these values to see what aligns and what might need to be changed. Finally we will move on to look at how you can make the necessary changes in your life.

How long this will take is very personal. we need to reflect on your past experiences in order to reshape your "Now", as well as working on developing a future which will provide you with a greater sense of fulfilment, purpose and contentment.

I see clients during the daytime or evenings, Monday to Thursday. A session with me will last for fifty minutes and we would meet once a week.
