About me and my therapy practice

I offer highly specialist, online training in working with people who have experienced domestic abuse or domestic violence.

Domestic abuse, whether witnessed or experienced as child or an adult, can lead to longer term mental health conditions such as high levels of anxiety, relationship and trust issues, depression, post-traumatic stress, suicidal ideation, low esteem and low self-confidence. Working with people who have experienced domestic abuse is complex work and requires care and attention, as well as knowledge of the topic and high levels of therapeutic skill. I have developed a range of training from half day introductory seminars to an intensive 4-day counselling training course which covers everything required to start working as a counsellor with people who have experienced domestic abuse.

The training I deliver is based on my published research on domestic abuse counselling, which includes the domestic abuse competency framework for counsellors, co-authored with Professor Lynne Gabriel in 2019. This framework was developed from client research, identifying what clients wanted from counselling and what counselling process works best for them. This has been tested in a clinical environment at the University of Salford and found to be very effective.

This model of domestic violence is applicable to all individuals who have experienced domestic abuse. I work from the basis that we process the experience of the individual, based on their own history and social context, rather than the social context of the perpetration. This is quite different to most other training, but it allows a much more flexible and inclusive approach for clients.

Training is available to book online through the Dactari website. However, I can also offer bespoke training that is suitable for particular organisational needs, either for one day or two day sessions. Please contact me to find out more about what I can offer and how that would fit with your organisation.

Practice description

The domestic abuse counselling training course is currently run 3 times per year and covers the competencies required for working with experiences of domestic abuse. This includes understanding domestic abuse and its impact on the individual, the therapeutic process that the client needs to move forward after their experiences, specific therapeutic skills required to support  your practice development, working with complex trauma and the well-being of the therapist. Domestic abuse work can take an emotional toll on a therapist and being aware of, and responding to, warning signs is essential to safe practice. Organisational best practice takes into account these risks and offers training and support to mitigate them.

Bespoke training can be offered to organisations to provide information about the psychological impact of domestic abuse, or the therapeutic skills required for engaging with domestic abuse clients. Additional specialist seminars on complex trauma and how to work with it, the legal processes that many clients have to go through and the ethics and safety of practitioner work are also available. Each organisation will have differences in what training has already been offered/delivered, hence the offer to create something that will 'plug the gaps' left by more generally available training.

We also offer some recorded training sessions which are available to download from our website. More training will added over the next year or so.

Please note that, to our knowledge, there are no other providers in the UK offering this level of training. Please do view our website https://www.dactari.co.uk. I would be delighted to work with you if there is something I could help with!
