Presentation information

The importance of safe spaces when working with children and young people with harmful sexual behaviours

9.40am – 10.40am

This workshop will give an overview of current practice which uses trauma informed, holistic models and new developments with regard to technology assisted HSB (TA-HSB) and Autism and HSB.

It will also consider how counsellors can be important in providing a safe space for children and young people to explore worries they may have about their sexual interests and thoughts.

Working with clients where a fear of behaving in a sexually harmful way is symptomatic of the client’s own childhood trauma

10.55am – 11.55am

Mankind UK are A BACP Accredited Service who predominantly work with male survivors of sexual abuse. As part of this work, a small percentage of clients fear that will go onto abuse others. This workshop will include best practice around assessing risk and working with clients affected by their own trauma.

Mankind UK will share the workshop space with a survivor’s story who will co-deliver the workshop with them. They will clearly set out when to refer on for more specialist interventions but will focus on working in what some counsellors may feel are ‘grey areas’.

Downloading of the presentation slides will be made available on the day here.

Stop-So (STOP- sexual offences)

12.10am - 1.10pm

StopSO offers a UK-wide independent network of suitably qualified and experienced professionals who are trained to work with potential sex offenders, sex offenders, survivors and their families.

During the presentation they will discuss how we can focus therapeutically on risk and look at how to best work with sexual harm and its consequences:

  • those at risk of sexual offending or concerned about their behaviour
  • non-offending persons experiencing inappropriate thoughts/feeling
  • those who have been cautioned, charged with or convicted of a sexual offence
  • those who are fearful of re-offending
  • those who are in prison
  • partners and families of the above
  • survivors of sexual abuse

The presentation will include anonymised case studies of best practice work.
