Voicing race: an enquiry into BAME women therapists’ experiences of speaking about race in counselling
February 2024 - Dee Raja Eyre
My PhD research explores BAME women therapists’ experiences of voicing race in counselling. BAME* includes African, Asian, mixed heritage and other non-white minorities.
I am interested in understanding how broaching, speaking about, or not acknowledging race might impact therapists’ emotions and interactions in the counselling encounter.
What it will involve:
I am looking for qualified therapists to take part in an interview to explore their experiences.
The interview will last up to an hour and a half and will be audio-recorded. It may be in person or online via Microsoft Teams, depending on preferences.
All participant information will be anonymised.
Eligibility:
To participate, you will need to:
- Be a BAME woman counsellor/therapist
- Have at least 3 years post-qualifying experience and be in regular supervision
- Be registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), or equivalent body
- Have experience of working with white and non-white clients
If you are interested, please contact me, Dee, on this email: deepika.eyre18@bathspa.ac.uk
Thank you

*The term BAME is used broadly here, to recognise inequalities experienced by these groups and individuals, while recognising their diverse and intersectional identities
