From Lived Experience to Therapeutic Intervention: Understanding a Therapists Experience of using Self-Disclosure of Eating Disorder Lived Experience
The purpose of this study is to understand how therapists experience self-disclosure of eating disorder lived experience when working with clients experiencing disordered eating.
Within the eating disorder field, it is widely understood that further therapeutic methods of treatment are needed to improve the current, low eating disorder recovery rates. Research suggests that therapeutic relationships play an important role in the successfulness of eating disorder recovery.
Therefore understanding what strengthens therapeutic relationships could be crucial in improving eating disorder recovery outcomes; research suggests therapists self-disclosure can enhance this. Despite the potential connection between these factors, there is limited research exploring therapist self-disclosure in eating disorder treatment.
This research therefore aims to contribute to the current, limited research surrounding therapist self-disclosure of eating disorder lived experience. In doing so, the researcher hopes to inform future, larger scale studies which can be used to inform clinical practice and improve the education of using therapist self-disclosure of eating disorder lived experience.
If you are a therapist with eating disorder lived experience, who has used self-disclosure of this with a client experiencing disordered eating, then you meet the criteria to participate.
If you wish to participate in this research, you will be invited to take part in online interview in which you will be asked a series of questions about your experience of using self-disclosure with clients experiencing disordered eating.
The interview will last between 45 minutes and 1 hour and will take place on Microsoft Teams, on a date and time convenient for you. With your consent, the interview will be audio recorded to ensure accuracy for later verbatim transcription and analysis: all data will be anonymised during the transcription process to protect participant confidentiality. All data will be securely stored on my password-protected university one drive account.
