What is the purpose of the study?
I am very interested in finding out about the experiences and views of integrative counsellors when they employ either cognitive-behavioural or psychodynamic approaches to support clients with anxiety issues. A key decision for an integrative therapist is what kind of approach to use, how and when. Often, the therapist will draw upon and combine techniques relevant to either cognitive-behavioural or psychodynamic perspectives.
I want to find out more about what guides this kind of integrative practice, and what your experiences have been in providing this kind of therapeutic approach. I also want to find out how therapists navigate therapeutic intervention at a deeper or a more surface level using these approaches.
What will happen if I take part?
I will collect data by conducting an interview with you should you choose to participate. The interview will be delivered in a semi-structured format to maximise the opportunity you have to speak freely about your experiences and views in delivering integrative therapy. Interviews will be about an hour long.
To be interviewed you must be:
- a UK-based counsellor qualified to Level 4 Diploma or above and,
- a member of a UK professional counselling body, with some experience of combining CBT and psychodynamic-leaning approaches.
What will happen to my data?
Once data has been collected, recordings will be transcribed and then analysed according to the principles of Reflexive Thematic Analysis. This research project will be carried out according to relevant ethical standards and principles of anonymity and confidentiality: see the BACP Ethical Guidelines for Research in the Counselling Professions.
