This study aims to explore how trainee christian counsellors experience group supervision, what they find supportive, challenging, and meaningful about the process.
The purpose of this study is to explore how trainee Christian counsellors experience and make sense of group supervision within secular agency settings, and to consider the implications for both supervision practice and training institutions. Your insights will help inform future training and supervision practices within counselling and psychotherapy.
If you choose to take part, you will be invited to a 60 minute semi structured interview conducted online via Microsoft Teams (simultaneously audible recorded). All data will be handled in accordance with ethical research standards. Your identity will remain confidential, and any identifying details will be removed from transcripts and reports. Participants may pause the interview, skip any questions, or withdraw from the study at any point without providing a reason. With participants’ consent, interviews will be audio recorded and transcribed.
All data will be anonymised. Data will be stored securely in encrypted, password protected files and managed in accordance with Waverley Abbey College’s data protection policies. A brief debrief session will follow each interview, including signposting to relevant support resources.
By sharing your experiences, you will contribute to a growing understanding of group supervision and its impact on counsellors’ wellbeing and professional growth.
Inclusion criteria:
Practicing Christians who consider their faith central to their lives and actively engage in religious activities (e.g., church attendance, Bible reading, prayer).
Trainee counsellors studying at a Christian institution/university, working toward at least a diploma level qualification.
Actively working with clients as part of their training.
Volunteering in at least one secular agency and attending regular secular group supervision (led by either a trainee or qualified supervisor, but the supervisor must be a qualified counsellor).
