An investigation into promoting self-advocacy among people with chronic illness.

*This research has been commissioned by West Suffolk College, Bury St Edmunds

My name is Sarah; this research is for an undergraduate degree in integrative counselling. Below is information for my Dissertation, and I need your support to participate in a short survey to highlight the current understanding of self-advocacy skills.

The main research question is 'How effective are current resources deployed for managing various chronic illnesses and how can the integration of a self-management care model promote the skill of self-advocacy amongst those in therapy with chronic illness'.

Both EDS and POTs can go undiagnosed for many years and are often misdiagnosed leaving patients and families struggling. I, myself was one of these patients and took 37 years for a diagnosis following multiple misdiagnoses and treatments. My experience of this chronic illness sparked an interest in self-advocacy as I volunteered as a patient advocate for chronic illness.

Within this dissertation, I will be employing a multi-method investigation. I will use focus groups and questionnaires. The primary aim is to identify the current status of self-advocacy models and their effectiveness in being deployed by professional counsellors and psychotherapists and to make recommendations for further encouragement of self- advocacy development among clients with chronic illness.

The objective is to explore reasons why chronic illness patients may struggle with self-advocacy. To highlight or improve any current integrative psychotherapeutic interventions deployed by counsellors/psychotherapist, to enhance better quality of life, among people with these chronic illnesses.
