About me and my therapy practice

I am a psychotherapist and I work in Roundhay, Leeds 8, where I provide a safe space for clients to talk. I also offer online and telephone therapy sessions.  As an integrative therapist I can tailor different therapies to suit you. My belief is that therapy cannot be rushed and only you know what is best for you. You will be in control of your therapy. Nothing will be expected from you, as we will allow things to unfold at your own pace.

My qualifications are:

• Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy (Leeds Beckett University)

• Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice (Leeds Beckett University)

• Postgraduate Diploma in Management (Chartered Management Institute)

• MA (Cantab) Hons (Law) (University of Cambridge)

Alongside my private work, I have been a volunteer counsellor at St Gemma's Hospice in Leeds, working with bereaved clients two afternoons each week. I have a special interest in incurable illness.

I also have experience of counselling sex abuse survivors, having worked for 18 months one day a week as a volunteer counsellor at Mosaic II, a specialist centre in Bradford.

As a solicitor I have worked with clients exposed to domestic violence and relationship breakdown, those who have suffered physical and psychiatric injury and victims of medical accidents. My long working life in the legal sector has given me in depth personal experience of workplace stress.

I have the significant life experience and maturity for deep empathy and a very calm demeanour. I am also an excellent active listener and a therapist who can help you to understand and challenge negative underlying belief systems.

Practice description

I work as a sole practitioner in my own home, in a dedicated quiet spacious private room.  My clients describe our space as 'peaceful', 'tranquil', 'a place where I can be quiet'.

I work with individuals and couples.  My work with individuals is very varied, as my clients come from a wide background aged from 18 to 80s.  I only work with adult clients.  My work covers many areas, such as trauma, abuse, workplace stress, relationship difficulties, bereavement, abandonment, illness, ageing, and isolation and loneliness.

My work with couples involves helping them to see that the relationship is the client on which we all work together, to enable each partner to reconnect and learn how to work towards change, moving from the feeling of being enmeshed in difficulty or estrangement towards a more open way to communicate with each other.

I see clients on a flexible basis to suit them, either weekly or fortnightly, or every 10 days.

My first session

You will meet me in my therapy room, either in person or remotely, which is quiet and safe. Nothing will be expected from you. You are free to say what you want, or to say nothing if you prefer. You might find it hard to talk, or hard to stop talking or you may worry about what will come out, once you start. You may cry, and this is a safe place (maybe the only place) where you can do this. I will listen calmly and carefully to you without judgement.

You might choose our first meeting to be a free non-commitment 30-minute session (for individual therapy) or a full hourly session. At this, while I will explain how we will work together, you will have the space to talk about what has brought you here. We can then either book your first full session, or you might prefer time to think about it, which will be completely fine.

Although making the decision to see me may seem daunting, when you arrive you will find that you have nothing to fear, and much to gain.
