I am a Masters student in Psychotherapy Studies at Bishop Auckland College. I am undertaking a qualitative research study exploring psychological safety within in-house counselling supervision.
The study aims to explore how therapists experience and make sense of psychological safety within supervision, particularly their ability to communicate openly and engage in reflective practice. I am interested in understanding the conditions that may enable or inhibit openness and trust within the supervisory relationship.
The research will also consider the impact of dual relationships, such as situations where a clinical supervisor also holds a management role within the organisation, and how this may influence therapists’ sense of safety and professional development.
Who can take part?
- I am looking for participants who meet the following criteria:
- A qualified therapist currently working within a UK counselling organisation.
- Currently receiving in-house clinical supervision provided by the organisation.
- A registered member of a professional body such as BACP, NCPS or UKCP.
- Willing to reflect on the conditions that enable openness, trust and reflective practice within supervision.
What does participation involve?
- Participation involves a one-to-one semi-structured research interview lasting approximately 60 minutes.
- Interviews can take place online via Microsoft Teams or in person, depending on your location and preference.
- With your informed consent, the interview will be recorded for transcription purposes. Your identity and the identity of your organisation will remain confidential, and the research data will be anonymised.
- The interviews will be analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), which aims to explore in depth how individuals make sense of their lived experiences.
Ethical approval for this research project has been granted by Bishop Auckland College.
