About me and my therapy practice

I have over 15 years of working as a Buddhist psychotherapist and work in a holistic way, using and drawing on many different techniques and models found in both western and eastern schools of thought.

Buddhist principles, namely compassion and insight, as well as acceptance and appreciation that we will and do encounter affliction throughout our lives underpin my work.

The understanding is that our lives are set within conditions that will have had an influence on our mental states and that sometimes these conditions lead us to making decisions and choices that might work but might not work out for us.

Through our lived experience we might get to a point where we feel overwhelmed by irrational thoughts and feelings and when we do, it is ok and normal to reach out for help.

As a therapist, I will help you to explore and understand some of these areas of difficulties that might be challenging to face alone.

Practice description

I have a private practice in Watford, however, due to the pandemic and being forced to work remotely, I have become more familiar with using online platforms for therapy sessions.

The session usually lasts 50 minutes, and in those 50 minutes, I will be guided by the client. The therapeutic process is a trusting one, and through using a variety of techniques, the client and I will be on a journey of discovery; of what techniques work for you as a client and of what there is to know about oneself and one's life.

I use a variety of techniques that can be found in many other schools of psychotherapy depending on the needs of my clients.

My first session

The first session is a time when we can get to know each other. It is treated more as a consultation than strictly therapy. In the first session, you will get to ask me any questions that are important for you to know about me and we will also discuss practical things like when we will meet, how often, and the fees and anything else that is important for you as a client to know.

About me and my therapy practice

I supervise from a Buddhist perspective. My training and background is in Buddhist psychology and I did my training at the Amida Trust which then changed to the Tariki Trust and also to the International Zen Therapy Institute.

This approach has a particular and detailed understanding of how the mind works based on 2,500 years of observation and experience. If therapists have trained in this approach then we will continue to deepen our understanding of the terminology, principles, values, and theories that underpin this type of therapy all with a view to better understand the client so that the therapist can work in a way that benefits the client.

This approach is a spiritual one, and sees the connections, the relationships, and life in general as essential to the well being of the client and will seek to understand the client from a holistic point of view.

Areas of interest will be at looking at the whole person. A person whose life is story that started within a the story of their parents and so on, and also whose story will inevitably come to end in this physical world. So issues around birth, family dynamics and death are all part of what we can expect to be looking at along with other presenting issues that the client brings to therapy.

Practice description

I am happy to meet in person or online using software applications like zoom. I will be guided by the supervisee and will check with the them about how we and what we talk about during the session. Sometimes, there will be a need to check in with how they are doing, and other times, it will be important to learn about other techniques that one might not have been trained in, and whatever, the needs are, I will facilitate and supervise in a way that responds to the needs of the supervisee who in turn is responding to the needs of their client work.

My first session

During the first session, you will get a chance to interview me and I will also get a chance to ask you some questions in order for us to get to know each other better.

Depending on your client load we will discuss some practical issues so that there is reassurance that you are meeting your professional needs as a therapist/counsellor.
