About me and my therapy practice

I'm Philippa, an experienced Integrative Counsellor who works with Adults and Teenagers aged 16+ on a long or short-term basis.  I provide face-to-face therapy sessions in Woodbridge and Kirton (near Felixstowe and Martlesham Heath) as well as offering telephone and on-line counselling.

As an Integrative Counsellor I work with a number of different psychotherapeutic methods and tailor therapy to meet your individual needs.

HOW COUNSELLING CAN HELP

Counselling has much to offer and can be extremely helpful when you find yourself struggling to cope emotionally.  Additionally, the insight and understanding that counselling provides can assist self-development and personal fulfilment.

When life becomes emotionally difficult, you may be aware of a specific event that has triggered this such as a bereavement, health or work issues, relationship/s, a change in our family or financial circumstances.  You may be the victim of bullying or have experienced trauma such a being involved in an accident or being the victim of abuse.  Or you may have no idea why you feel the way you do - you just know that you are struggling and want to feel better!

Counselling can provide you with the tools you need to handle your emotions so they do not continue to overwhelm you.  It can help you gain a better understanding of yourself and help you to make sense of how you are feeling,  building resilience and self-esteem,  enabling you to make positive change and move forward.

MY EXPERIENCE

I have experience of working with a range of issues, including (but not limited to) Anxiety, Stress, Low Self-Esteem, Depression, Relationship Issues, Grief/Bereavement and Baby Loss, and OCD.  I work with clients who have been diagnosed or assessed with EUPD/BPD,  ADHD and ASD.  I have additional training and expertise working with Trauma/PTSD, Domestic Abuse, Workplace Bullying and Coercive, Controlling Behaviour.  A particular focus of my work has been counselling adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

MY APPROACH

As well as offering you a safe space, as a fully qualified Integrative Counsellor I am able to combine a number of different psychotherapeutic methods and tailor therapy to suit your needs. My approach to counselling is to be open, non-judgemental and encouraging - It is important that you feel able to explore your emotions freely. However, therapy may not always be comfortable. In order for significant change to happen there are times when you may need to move beyond your comfort zone, and therefore, when appropriate, my approach is challenging. That said, therapy is led by you - you decide what you want to explore and we work together at your pace.

Therapy may be short-term, mainly solution-focused where we look at developing strategies and providing the tools you need to help you handle your emotions effectively. Or it can be more in-depth, longer-term therapy where we explore your past to identify the root causes of your current emotional issues. This can give you a much greater understanding of yourself and help you to make sense of how you are feeling, enabling you to have more control of your emotions and make the positive changes you need to feel better.

My first session

During the first session, we will establish the reasons why you want to engage in therapy and what you would like to achieve.  We we also ensure that the therapy I offer is right for you and that you are comfortable working with me.  There is a small amount of paperwork to complete then the reminder of the session and subsequent sessions are for you to talk about the issues that have brought you to counselling and for us to work through them together.
