About me and my therapy practice
My Approach
I am an Integrative Counsellor and I have chosen to work mainly within the Person - Centred Counselling framework. Person-centred counsellors create a climate of unconditional positive and congruent relationship for clients to explore their emotions and difficulties. In practice I have found I am able the use this approach to adapt to individuals’ specific needs. This paired with empathy, non-judgment and authenticity are the key to creating a relationship that promotes growth and change.
I am DBS checked and I adhere to the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy Ethical Framework which ensures that the highest professional standards are kept to, to guarantee that our clients receive best practice.
Practice description
My Background
As a fully qualified Counsellor of over 25 years practice, my journey into mental health began with some major personal midlife experiences. At NAG (Nottingham Advocacy Group) as a trainee mental health advocate in 1992 I was accepted as a student at the University of Nottingham and studied Psychology and Sociology for 4 years. It was here I also studied and practiced as a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor. Since this time, I have developed a vast wealth of experience, conducted research and worked in a wide range of community settings. I have also had the role of Managing Director, researching with a team to provide survivors of abuse and users of mental health, robust services to become expert consultants, trainers, researchers, independent advocates and campaigners. Although this list isn't definitive, it does cover a large proportion of reasons why people reach out for support. Are you perhaps:
Working towards a goal
Experiencing major upheavals in life
Needed to talk to someone outside of a friendship or family group
Needing a safe place to express emotions and thoughts
Having issues with relationships
Feeling confused of aspects of life
Working through unresolved trauma
Managing mental health issues
Struggling to deal with grief or loss
Identifying if what you are experiencing is ‘normal’
My first session
Getting Started
Seeking therapy for yourself can be a daunting process. You may even doubt whether your needs are ‘worthy’ enough. Everyone deserves support, but Assessments are a great way of gaining more information on therapy and deciding if it’s the right option. There are many reasons why adults seek the help of a psychotherapist or counsellor, but it boils down to the individual struggling with life on life’s terms. None of us is equipped with a complete set of emotional tools to navigate our living experiences successfully. As your therapist it is my role to support you to build your emotional tool kit.
