About me and my therapy practice
Are you feeling anxious or depressed, perhaps about work, money, or your relationships? Perhaps you feel isolated or scared about the future - or about the state of the world around us?
Counselling offers you a safe space in which to discuss these kinds of problems, find answers where they exist, work through painful memories and experiences and come to a greater sense of happiness and equilibrium. That may involve coming for just a few weekly sessions, or it may need longer-term exploration.
I'm a 'person-centred' counsellor with over twenty years of experience. I welcome clients from diverse cultures and ethnic backgrounds, adults of all ages, as well as different genders, beliefs and sexual orientations.
If you would like to know more, or to arrange a first session, do get in touch.
Practice description
There are many different types of counselling and psychotherapy and when you just want some help, it can be confusing. I always aim to do what works best for you. This may include using specific techniques, for example Mindfulness and CBT, though my basic therapeutic approach is ‘person-centred’.
Person-centred therapy was started by Carl Rogers back in the 1950s. Carl Rogers saw counselling as a partnership (rather than a doctor-patient relationship) in which therapist and client work together for change and growth. He put forward the idea, which is commonly accepted today, that it’s the good therapeutic relationship between counsellor and client, which is the essential cornerstone on which successful therapy is built.
“When I have been listened to and when I have been heard, I am able to re-perceive my world in a new way and to go on. It is astonishing how elements that seem insoluble become soluble when someone listens, how confusions that seem irremediable turn into relatively clear flowing streams when one is heard.” – Carl Rogers, the founder of person-centred counselling.
This kind of counselling is based on equality, trust and acceptance. It means that counselling is a safe space to express what you can’t talk about anywhere else, or have been unable to express before. Each counselling session is a chance to explore how you feel, to work out why things are as they are and to see what needs to be different. You may notice patterns that repeat themselves in your life. Together we’ll look at both the recent past and much further back, so that you can understand your life better. Then you can work out what new choices you want to make and take action to improve your life.
My first session
Throughout the first session, we’ll be getting to know each other and deciding whether to commit to working longer with each other. We’ll also start work on what’s troubling you.
Before the session I will have sent you a copy of my Counselling Agreement and we’ll talk through that, either at the start of the session or later on, whichever seems best. I’ll also explain about confidentiality.
For the bulk of the session, we’ll look at what’s prompted you to get in touch at this time and what you are hoping to get out of counselling. I may ask about your life more generally and find out what kind of emotional support you have, either from friends or family. We’ll talk about how therapy works and what you can do to make the most of it. We’ll also look at what your goals are from having therapy.
At the end of the session, we’ll decide whether to have further sessions and I’ll explain about the different options. Once again, you don’t have to decide this immediately. There’s no pressure. If you prefer you can go away and have a think about what you would like to do.
I do charge for the first session, at my usual rate.
