About me and my therapy practice

As a supervisor, my approach is both supportive and collaborative, designed to foster professional growth and development for both qualified and trainee counsellors. I offer a combination of one-to-one and small group supervision, tailoring each session to the individual or group’s needs. My aim is to create a safe, open, and reflective space where counsellors can explore their practice, process complex cases, and develop their skills.

I offer formative supervision, which focuses on helping supervisees develop their competence, knowledge, and understanding. This includes discussing client cases, reviewing approaches to therapy, and considering personal and professional growth areas. My role is to guide supervisees through challenges and support their development in becoming more effective and confident practitioners.

My specialisms lie in person-centred and gestalt therapies, and I bring a strong emphasis on these approaches in supervision. In person-centred supervision, I focus on creating an empathetic, non-judgmental space where supervisees can explore their thoughts, feelings, and therapeutic relationships. In gestalt, I incorporate the importance of awareness, present moment experiences, and working through unfinished business, supporting supervisees to be fully engaged in their process.

Ultimately, my goal as a supervisor is to empower supervisees to grow in their professional journey, offering guidance, challenge, and a space for self-reflection.

Practice description

As a pluralistic formative supervisor, my practice is grounded in flexibility, adapting to the unique needs of each supervisee. With 12 years of therapeutic experience and 7 years of supervision experience, I offer valuable insight to both qualified counsellors and trainee counsellors. I am a passionate researcher who believes that ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is essential for maintaining and enhancing clinical competence, and I ensure my supervision practice remains informed by the latest research.

I utilise the developmental model of supervision, recognising that counsellors progress through different stages in their professional journey. This model allows me to tailor supervision to the supervisee’s level of experience, addressing their specific needs and challenges at each stage. It enables targeted guidance and reflection, supporting growth and development.

In formative supervision, my aim is to help supervisees develop their clinical competence. This involves reviewing client cases, offering feedback on techniques, and exploring challenges or dilemmas in therapy. I focus on providing support through safe, reflective guidance, ensuring that the supervisee feels empowered to develop their skills and practice.

I am committed to creating an empathetic, reflective space where supervisees can explore their feelings, thoughts, and behaviours. This space encourages the exploration of therapeutic relationships, personal reactions, and ethical considerations, fostering personal and professional growth.

Ultimately, my goal is to foster ethical practice, confidence, and professional development in supervisees, helping them grow as competent, reflective practitioners within their counselling roles.

My first session

In our first supervision session, it is essential for us to build a strong foundation and set clear expectations for the future. We will begin by building rapport, where we introduce ourselves, share our experience, and I will explain my approach to supervision. This helps create an open, comfortable space. I will encourage open communication and reassure you that the environment is confidential and non-judgmental. Together, we will explore your expectations for supervision, including your goals and areas you would like to focus on.

Next, we will clarify the supervision framework.  I will explain developmental approach and how the sessions will be structured. We will discuss our respective roles and responsibilities, ensuring clarity on confidentiality, ethical guidelines, attendance, and communication. We will also set ground rules for feedback and honesty and agree on practical matters such as scheduling.

We will review your experience, discuss your training, the modality you use, and the challenges you are facing in your current caseload. This will help me tailor the supervision to your specific needs, whether you are a trainee or a more experienced practitioner.

We will discuss your supervision preferences and feedback styles to understand how you prefer to receive guidance. We will agree on session frequency and duration, and reflect on both your personal and professional growth.

Finally, we will confirm logistics and scheduling, establish a system for communication between sessions, and address any record-keeping practices. We will close the session by inviting feedback, allowing you to reflect on what was helpful and areas to explore in future meetings.

By offering these elements, we will establish a supportive, trusting supervisory relationship with clear expectations for ongoing development.
