About me and my therapy practice

Hello and welcome.

I offer individual counselling and psychotherapy to adults.  My approach is Integrative, this means I am qualified (MSc ICP) to use a range of recognised therapies, and well-established methods. My aim is to provide a non-judgemental space so that you feel safe to explore whatever is troubling you.  I can assure you that I provide a confidential gentle space for you to feel valued and heard.  If I don't feel I can help I will be honest and support you to find someone who can.

Everyone’s brain and life experiences are unique, so an Integrative approach recognises that one size doesn’t fit all and tailors therapy to you.  Collaboratively working with you for what you feel you need, at your pace, and using tools that have been shown to be effective.

The three main approaches I use are Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Person-Centred, and Psychodynamic Theory (which considers your childhood experiences). Which particularly approach used will depend on the issue(s) that you want to bring and on how you prefer to work.

Practice description

I believe that seeking help is a healthy and a normal part of life, but I recognise that it takes courage. I want to reassure you that all your thoughts, feelings, concerns, and questions are valid and will be handled sensitively. Previous clients have found that the experience of counselling not only helped them to alleviate  their suffering but increased their confidence and benefited others  around them.

Over the past 10 years I have worked in private practice with both adults and young people; and have volunteered for 15 years for Choices Counselling, offering counselling support to clients with unplanned pregnancy concerns; antenatal or postnatal depression; anxiety around parenting; loss both miscarriage/still birth.

My post graduate research focused on what type of therapies work best for alleviating postnatal depression.  The results showed that the particular approach used wasn't the most important factor for success, but the quality of relationship the person felt that they had with their therapist.  Knowing how important this is for all therapeutic work, I offer you a free 20-minute exploratory session on-line to see if I am the right therapist for you, and to check that I have the knowledge that you need to help with your concerns.

As a registered member of the BACP I adhere to their ethical guidelines, undertake regular monthly clinical supervision, and keep up to date with professional developments to ensure best practice.

Working on-line or face-to-face with you, you will find that I give my undivided attention. I encourage your understanding, curiosity, and self-awareness by sharing what I hear from you. The healing process is multi-dimensional as it benefits your mind, body, emotions, and spirit. This deepens your sense of who you are and allows you to make the best choices for you and sometimes seeing choices that you never knew you had.

My first session

If you decide to go ahead with therapy after our free 20-minute exploratory session (using Zoom/Teams or telephone), we can then decide on the how and where to work together.

I can offer in person counselling, and have access to a lovely quiet space close to the centre of Buxton.   However at times I am only available for online sessions.

Whether in person or face-to-face, at our first session I will undertake a full assessment, and check your understanding before contracting.  Adjustments to our agreement can be made, as I recognise it is hard to know how many sessions you feel you might need.  I also undertake regular reviews so you know the progress you are making.  This also gives you the opportunity to change anything that isn't working for you.

I can be flexible on the times/days as I don't work full time and I limit the number of clients that I see.

If you decide to go ahead with therapy after our free 20-minute exploratory session (using Zoom/Teams or telephone), we can then decide on the how and where to work together.
