About me and my therapy practice

Who can you turn to when the unthinkable happens?

If you have lost a baby, whether through miscarriage, abortion, stillbirth, neonatal or cot death, you will know the devastating and long-lasting effects it can have, even many years after the event - long after everyone else has either forgotten or thinks that you "should be over it by now". Grief has no "sell by date", whether you are mourning the loss of a baby or experiencing the deep, painful, gut-wrenching longing for a child you have been unable to conceive.

I've been helping parents (or would-be parents) both women and men who have experienced baby loss or infertility or who are going through IVF or surrogacy, for over ten years. I have specific training and experience in this area, but mostly I am passionate in working with the often unresolved grief and unexpressed feelings which are sometimes made worse by hurtful though well-meaning comments of other people.

Losing a baby or being unable to conceive can bring with it a multitude of feelings - anxiety, anger (why me?), guilt and shame, not to mention the fear of trying to become pregnant again after a loss. You may feel isolated and alone because other people don't understand or maybe you are struggling to maintain your relationship with your partner whilst putting on a brave face and pretending everything is okay. Perhaps you have never told anyone about the loss of your child.

A different but equally devastating type of loss is when you have become alienated from a child through divorce, adoption, or relationship breakdown. Knowing that your son or daughter is alive but refuses or is prevented from having a relationship with you has been described as a "living bereavement".

Whatever your situation, I will meet you where you are and walk alongside you in your grief. I can't say how many sessions it will take but many of my past clients have reported feeling lighter, more hopeful, better able to cope with life, and less alone after we have worked together.

My first session

What can you expect your first session to be like? After greeting you, there will be time for us to start to get to know one another and to see if we are a good "fit". The relationship between therapist and client is the most important factor in ensuring therapy works, so it is important to choose the counsellor who is right for you.

I use the first session (which is free of charge) to assess where you currently are emotionally and to find out about what has brought you to counselling and whether I feel I can help. I won't ask you to commit to ongoing sessions straightway, unless you are ready to do so.

I offer weekday daytime and early evening face to face supervision to qualified and trainee practitioners, as well as daytime and evening online sessions.

About me and my therapy practice

I am a fully qualified Clinical Supervisor and hold a Level 6 Advance Certificate in Clinical Supervision including face to face, online and telephone working. I offer affordable supervision to both qualified and trainee practitioners,

My approach is relational and supportive. I see supervision as a colleague-to-colleague activity in which therapist and supervisor work together in the best interest of the client. If you work with clients online, then it is best practice to receive all or most of your supervision the same way.

I have trained specifically as an Online Supervisor, to take account of phenomena such the ‘Disinhibition Effect’ and the ‘Black Hole Effect’, which exist in the online world, but which are not encountered in face to face work. I am an experienced psychodynamic counsellor, registered with and accredited by the BACP. My background includes several years’ experience of working as a tutor, training counselling students.

I work psychodynamically within an integrative framework, using the 7-eyed model of supervision and I welcome supervisees of all modalities.

If you are looking for a new supervisor and are interested in seeing if we are a good fit, contact me today to book a free initial one-hour consultation.
