About me and my therapy practice
I am an accreditied member of the BACP and have a wide range of counselling experience having worked with adults, adolescents and children in private practice (online and face-to-face), agencies and school settings. For the last three years I have worked online with adults in private practice, but offer face to face sessions also.I feel that working with all aspects of troubling experience: thoughts, feelings, behaviours and sensory aspects, provides a picture from which key areas to work on emerge. As research has highlighted effective approaches I have incorporated these and as a result my approach draws on a range of theories: trauma-informed approaches such as EMDR, sensorimotor psychotherapy, polyvagal theory, IFS, ERP and mindfulness exercises. Additionally, I draw from cognitive behavioural approaches and attachment theory. My clients soon find the way of working that suits them.
I'm a qualified EMDR therapist through EMDR Europe Association. EMDR is beneficial for a range of symptoms. The client retains conscious control over the processing and there is an eight phase protocol which provides structure for the client. Positive results are frequently seen more quickly than through talking therapies alone and do not require distressing material to be spoken about in depth.
I have an interest in neurodivergent conditions, having worked with clients with ASD, ADHD & OCD. Recognising conducive environments in which the authentic self can flourish and masking minimised is key. A neurodivergent presentation changes according to the state of the nervous system - supporting the use of mindfulness and sensorimotor skills. Working with strengths and supporting executive function and self-care is also important. Whether to seek a diagnosis and/or processing its impact is part of the work.
Taking that step towards healing takes courage. By effective attunement, I aim to assist clients in their journey of reconnection to self and others, and towards achieving their goals.
Practice description
I provide a safe, empathic and non-judgemental space for people to explore their experiences and be actively heard and understood. Through close attunement and tracking my clients gain greater awareness and understanding fostering increased self-compassion, which enables progress to take place. I view the therapeutic relationship as a 'we' - I offer my authentic self as a co-worker and one who recognises that I'm not the expert on another person's life but I am a facilitator - prompting reflections, observations and ideas to aid my clients' processing and promoting active change towards their goals.
I offer a free 20 minutes consultation before a first session. This is a chance for you to see if you feel we can work well together and for you to decide if you would like to book a first session. Please email me at hmcbellamy@proton.me to set it up.
Before the first session, a contract for the therapy needs to be read, signed and returned. Key areas such as limits to confidentiality will be re-visited in the first session.
I offer a range of high quality and evidence-based resources related to their particular concerns and we would have regular reviews to get feedback and discuss levels of satisfaction with the therapy.
I offer 50 minute sessions for therapy and 75 minutes sessions for EMDR . Whilst I generally work online, face-to face sessions can be arranged in Brixton, South London. There are different rates for each of these, so please email for more details.
I offer a concessionary rate to full time students.
My first session
In the first session the contract will be discussed and any questions answered. Payment needs to be made before the first session commences. If there is a problem then the session can be rescheduled, but I ask for 24 hours notice or the full amount is payable.
I would ask about any previous experiences of therapy that you've had and what you feel the impact was and if you have a sense of a way of working that suits you.
I would ask what your goals are for our work together and whether you have any limitiations on say frequency or number of sessions.
I do not have a set format for a first session, but during our dialogue I will ask for pertient details as the need arises, so that I have an accurate sense of the current situation and what the difficulties are. You are in control of your information whilst being assured of confidentiality (within limits) as defined in the BACP Code of Ethics.
I am flexible with frequency to accommodate your needs - fortnightly or every three weeks or a combination of both is fine.
