About me and my therapy practice

Hello, I’m Matt (he/they). I am an Integrative Psychotherapist, Clinical Supervisor, Psychosexual and Relationship Therapist, and Celebrant. I am a Clinical Associate of Pink Therapy. I am an Accredited member of the BACP and a Registered member of COSRT.

Personal therapy can be a safe, confidential space to explore what is going on for you. Some people have a specific area they want to talk about while others might want to explore a range of issues. You are welcome to discuss anything in therapy with me. I work collaboratively with clients, supporting you to reflect on your own needs or hopes.

My core therapy training was an integrative course using Egan’s model to blend humanistic, psychodynamic, and cognitive therapy into a cohesive approach. Throughout my training we worked creatively, embracing collage, art and poetry. I have carried this over to my client work as I offer working creatively to explore mental health.

I also offer Psychosexual and Relationship therapy which is a specialist type of therapy designed to address both sexual and relational issues for individuals, couples, throuples, polycules, and other relationship dynamics. Psychosexual issues may include erectile dysfunction, rapid or delayed ejaculation, vaginismus, pain during sex, compulsive sexual behaviours, or Chemsex. Some examples of relational issues include communication difficulties, trust issues, recurring arguments, or navigating changing relational dynamics.

I primarily work with Queer, Neurodivergent, and Kink communities and bring lived experience as a member of these communities. I understand the unique issues that many people in these groups face and have significant experience with addressing those challenges. This experience is further underpinned by training and CPD. Prior to training as a therapist, I spent years working and volunteering for different LGBT+ organisations. I am passionate about mental and sexual health and first began working in these areas in 2007.

Practice description

Areas of specialism:

Queerness

I have extensive experience working within the LGBTQIA+ community. I began working in this area in 2007. I have a deep understanding of Queer culture and issues faced by our community. I work with clients around identity, belonging, minority stress, or trauma from homophobia/biphobia/transphobia. I also support clients with fostering Queer joy and resilience. I have written about Queer Spirituality and have experience working with survivors of conversion practices.

Autism

I have significant experience working with autistic clients and take a neuro-affirmative approach in my work. I recognise societal structures that impact autistic people in their daily lives. I can support autistic clients with understanding sensory profiles, unmasking, and acceptance. I conducted the first study into autistic people’s experiences of psychosexual therapy, which is currently being peer reviewed for publication.

Kink/BDSM

I offer Kink knowledgeable therapy underpinned by experience and training. I am able to work with clients to understand and explore their Kink/BDSM identities. I regularly work with clients around addressing safe Kink/BDSM practice, finding community, addressing internalised shame or navigating relational dynamics. I have experience working with clients in Dom/sub relationships and other dynamics. I welcome clients to bring their authentic selves and feel safe to explore any aspect of their Kink/BDSM life in therapy.

Chemsex

Chemsex is the use of drugs such as Crystal Meth, GHB/GBL, or Methamphetamine to enhance sexual experiences primarily for men who have sex with men. The reasons for Chemsex use are complicated and I offer specialist support for people who are wanting to address their Chemsex use. I work with clients in recovery and clients who are actively engaging with Chemsex.

Whether you are looking to stop Chemsex altogether or are wanting to better understand and take control of your use, I may be able to support you with this.

My first session

I charge £70 for 1 hour appointments and £105 for 1.5 hour sessions.

I am passionate about mental and sexual health and first began working in these areas in 2007. I am a Clinical Associate of Pink Therapy. I am an Accredited member of the BACP and a Registered member of COSRT. I am also a COSRT Registered Supervisor.

I am a qualified supervisor and able to offer clinical supervision for therapists and for trainee counsellors. I work using the seven eyed model of supervision while also considering the importance of the three functions of supervision (formative, normative, and restorative). As a supervisor, my role is to support you with your client work and to facilitate exploration of issues arising from this work. I regularly work with Bond’s Ethical Decision Making Model for collaboratively approaching ethical dilemmas.

I have completed the COSCA Certificate in Counselling Supervision, which includes 15 credits at SCQF level 9.

I was previously the Student Counselling Lead for Edinburgh College where I managed a team of qualified and trainee counsellors. I would run the counselling team group supervision. I would provide additional supervision for both counsellors and trainee counsellors within the team as required. I am experienced with supporting and managing trainee counsellors.

I bring experience of handling complex ethical issues such as self-harm or suicidal ideation. In addition, I have substantial experience around working with Neurodivergence, GSRD (Gender, Sex, and Relationship Diversity), Kink/BDSM, Chemsex, and Spirituality.

I currently have some space for supervisees. I charge £70 per hour for clinical supervision. I offer a reduced rate of £50 per hour for trainee counsellors.

My first session

I offer a free 20 minute initial meeting. This gives an opportunity to discuss your supervision needs, ask any questions you may have, and see if you feel we would be able to work well together.
