About me and my therapy practice

Hello I'm Jo.

I'm happy to see you take the first tentative steps towards seeking counselling and help.

Are you experiencing changes in your life that are confusing or distressing? Do you feel overwhelmed at times with anxiety or stress? Feel that you might need someone safe and reliable to help you explore these feelings?

I understand how difficult it can be to ask for help, I know it can take an great deal of courage when you feel so uncertain.

The relationship between counsellor and client is really important, so you can feel comfortable, listened to and feel heard, able to explore your thoughts and feelings at your own pace. So it's important to find a counsellor you feel comfortable with and understands your feelings.

I am a Humanistic Existential Counsellor, however, everyone is unique so I'm able to adapt my approach to suit your needs.

I offer a confidential, safe and welcoming space where you feel able to explore your thoughts and feelings without fear of being judged.

I will not lead or advise you but support and encourage you to explore your own lived experiences, emotions and feelings to help you find a better way forward and to help you to recognise the choices you might have.

I have worked with  carers expereincing the challenges of their caring role looking after loved ones with  Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Autistic Spectrum Disorders, physical disabilities.

I also work with clients  experiencing a variety of concerns which include but not limited to - depression, loss, bereavement, lack of motivation, relationship, family dynamics, self-esteem and work work-related issues.

Practice description

I am happy to offer a brief free informal telephone chat without obligation, Ie. 15 minutes,  to answer any questions you may have and to help you decide whether you feel I may be the right counsellor for you.

If you feel I am the right person, we can discuss a regular session time.

Sessions would normally last 50 minutes and could be weekly or fortnightly. You are free to choose how long you come to counselling.

Some people find the support they need in a few sessions and other people like to come for longer.

Short term work can help with a specific issue or simply offer some support at times of uncertainty.

Longer term work could help lead to more profound changes.

My first session

Generally, we will have chatted on the telephone before we meet face to face or online.

In the first session we would talk through the therapeutic agreement form and confidentiality policy. We will make a working agreement contract for appointment times.

We may start to explore what has brought you to counselling if your feeling comfortable.

There will be time to ask questions to ensure you fully understand what counselling offers and how it could be helpful to you.

Alternatively, if your first session is online we will have spoken on the telephone before our first session and arranged an initial online appointment.

Prior to this session you will have received an initial details form, a therapeutic agreement, and in a separate email a link to our first appointment via a Zoom.

In the first session we will talk through these forms and how we will manage online working, specifically we will look at what happens if we lose internet connection and keeping you safe online.
