Availability

I offer both in-person and online counselling, giving you the flexibility to choose the way of working that feels most comfortable and convenient for you.

In-person sessions provide a private, supportive space where we can meet face-to-face, while online sessions allow you to access counselling from the comfort of your own home or another private space.

Whether we meet in person or online, my approach remains the same: a confidential, non-judgemental space where you can talk openly, at your own pace, about whatever is happening in your life.

About me and my therapy practice

I’m a person-centred counsellor offering both in-person and online counselling. My approach is straightforward, honest and focused on helping you understand what’s going on for you and make meaningful, lasting change — without jargon or judgement.

I work with adults experiencing a wide range of difficulties, including anxiety, trauma, PTSD, depression, relationship difficulties, loss, low self-esteem and feeling stuck or overwhelmed. You don’t need to have a diagnosis or even know exactly what’s wrong; sometimes you simply know that something needs to change.

Before becoming a counsellor, I served on the front line in the British Army. That experience shaped the way I work and taught me a great deal about resilience, adversity and the fact that people from every walk of life can struggle. I bring that same grounded, down-to-earth approach to counselling.

Our sessions are centred around you. I’ll listen and give you the space to explore things openly, but I won’t simply sit silently and nod. Where appropriate, I’ll ask questions, offer reflections and challenge you to look at things from a different perspective. We work together, at your pace, on the things that matter to you.

I offer face-to-face sessions as well as secure video and telephone counselling, giving you the flexibility to choose the format that works best for you.

Practice description

At Jack English Counselling, I offer a straightforward, supportive and down-to-earth approach to therapy. Counselling doesn’t have to feel clinical or overly formal. It’s a space where you can talk openly, be yourself and explore what’s going on without judgement.

I offer both in-person and online sessions, allowing you to choose what works best for you. Face-to-face sessions are available for clients who prefer to meet in person, while secure video and telephone sessions provide flexibility if you would rather access counselling remotely.

I work primarily from a person-centred approach, which means you remain at the heart of our work together. However, I don’t believe that means simply sitting back and saying very little. I’m an active part of the conversation: I’ll listen, ask questions, reflect things back and, when it may be helpful, challenge you to consider something differently.

I also draw on ideas and techniques from other therapeutic approaches, including CBT and DBT, where they may be useful to you. I don’t believe in forcing everyone into one particular way of working; what helps one person may not help another.

I work with adults from all backgrounds and support people with issues including trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, anger, relationship difficulties, loss, low self-esteem and men’s mental health.

Ultimately, my aim is to help you understand yourself better, make sense of what you’re experiencing and find your own way forward — with support alongside you rather than somebody telling you how you should live your life.

My first session

Booking your first session is simple and can be done directly through my website. You can choose between an in-person, video or telephone session, depending on what feels most comfortable and convenient for you.

Your first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other and for you to talk about what has brought you to counselling. There’s no expectation that you arrive knowing exactly what you want to talk about or what you want to change — we can work that out together.

It’s also a chance for you to get a feel for how I work and decide whether I’m the right counsellor for you. Finding someone you feel comfortable talking to is important, so there’s no pressure or commitment to continue beyond the first session.

I don’t use lengthy assessments or expect you to complete lots of forms. We’ll have an open, straightforward conversation about what’s happening for you, what you would like from counselling and how we might work together.

Most importantly, you can come as you are. You don’t need to prepare anything or have the right words — we’ll start wherever you are.
