About the event

My lived experience entering the counselling profession

Abigail Denny focuses on the barriers she faced entering the profession and how these can be potentially removed.

It will be highlighted how it is trained to hold unconditional positive regard (UPR) at the core however, this does not seem to extend to those within the profession. Enduring any kind of difference does not mean you are any less capable than others.

You'll consider and explore:

  • the impact of barriers in your training institutions or services
  • how to remove barriers
  • how to embed EDI or diversity as a core element to your training course or service
  • how to support students or clients in your organisations
  • how to increase accessibility to your training course or service

How Counselling Courses May Implement Future Training for Those with Disabilities

Calum Jones presents on how counselling courses can incorporate reasonable adjustments for those with physical, psychological, and neurological disabilities, who are training to be counsellors, and for when working with clients. To bring awareness to ableism that exists within counselling and psychotherapy training by using the social model of disability.

This session will allow members to consider/explore:

  • awareness of ableism that exists within counselling training
  • to gain an understanding of the types of reasonable adjustments needed within counselling training
  • an understanding of the social model of disability

Presenter biographies

Abigail Denny is a Counsellor and a Supervisor in training studying a level 6 diploma in supervision. Abigail holds a BA hons in Counselling Skills, and a PGCE specialising in Counselling Skills and currently works Private Practice.

Abigail aims to highlight how counsellors are trained to hold unconditional positive regard (UPR) however, this does not seem to extend to those within the profession. Enduring a life changing injury ignited Abigail's passion, undertaking individual research in to, anti-oppressive practice for the therapist entering the Counselling profession as well as the client entering the therapeutic relationship. Shining a light on blockades, that are not purely physical, but also emotional. Abigail holds first hand experience of a disabled professional entering the Counselling community. Exploring how, the individual can often be judged on surface presentation, leaving them on the outside fighting to get in and be recognised.

Callum Jones is a doctorate student, studying Counselling and Psychological. Callum has a masters in Counselling, and a BA in Counselling Skills with Criminology, and is currently employed by the University of Salford as a lecturer in Counselling and Psychotherapy, as well as working in Private Practice.

A staunch socialist, Callum can often be found on his Podcast 'The Therapy Files' with another counselling colleague, discussing contemporary societal issues in and outside of the therapy room.
