About me and my therapy practice

Hello my name is Rolain I am currently based in the city of Edinburgh and I have a diploma qualification in Counselling/Psychotherapist. I am registered with the BACP, currently working towards accreditation. Below is a list of addition personal development courses I have attended:

As part of my training and in conjunction with Safe Space in Dunfermline, I have worked with survivors of sexual abuse. That experience has helped me to meet a diverse clientele, in age, sexual orientation and traumas experienced. After graduating, I volunteered and later worked with a range of youth-based organisations, including Trinity Academy School, The Junction and Edinburgh Young Carers. As a private practitioner at The Edina Studio, I have worked with adults from various backgrounds.

My life experiences and the emotionally struggles I have coped with, have given me a rich body of knowledge, while acknowledging the impact of processing personal issues, such as ethnicity, race, depression, dissociation, trauma, anxiety, LGBTI and bereavement to name a few. Both the receiving and the giving of therapy has helped my personal development, as well as the academic training stated on this site.

In my practice I feel I have a natural sense for several therapy methods, such as Self-Compassion, Grounding, Art & Creative Writing but especially the Person-Centred approach, all of which help to support the process of change or acceptance.

Practice description

Our lives are busy and fast paced and at times traumatic events occur, but they are lost in translation as we continue to live our lives. People interact with us and pass on their fears to us. Their personal needs and lack of understanding overshadow ours. When we face these situations, we adjust internally and act in a way that feels safe enough to carry on. These adjustments become ingrained behaviours, ideas and attitudes that don’t fully speak of who we truly are. Therapy teaches us about how we experience and try to symbolise traumatic events, past and present, and how those events can affect a person’s life today.

Overview

 I aim to help you identify inconsistent thinking, by understanding your experiences, hopes, dreams, and the judgements you hold against yourself.

 I aim to help you identify how your understanding can help or hinder you in your present life.

I aim to help you integrate and understand the experiences in your life that you may have previously not recognised or fully accepted.

 I aim to help you identify the needs and struggles of the different parts of you, and to help you understand which parts may be in conflict with your inner self.

I aim to help you identify ways you are triggered and the struggles you face with the people in the world outside of you.


My first session

The first, initial session, is one hour in duration just like a normal therapy session, although I don't aim to go to deep and open up all the issues. This is just in case you don't want to come back or if you are not returning to therapy straight away, so you are not left experiencing difficult emotions from our session.

During this first session, I will:

Aim to get an understanding of what brings you to therapy.

Explain the way I may work with you in relation to your problems.

Reflect with you and decide if we seem a good relational fit for the work, including evaluating if I am experienced enough to manage the specific issues you bring.

Talk through practical issues such as costs, confidentiality, boundaries, contracts, times of meeting, modes of available therapy.

This first session can be conducted in a variety of ways including via Skype, face to face and more.
