About me and my therapy practice
My name is Catherine Sharp.I am a BACP accredited and UKCP registered psychotherapist/counsellor.I currently work both in private practice and as lead therapist for Service Six (a Northamptonshire charity working with children young people and adults). I have considerable experience of working within the NHS and alongside Social Services.I run training days on Anxiety, Obsessive Behaviours and have co-led an extensive programme working with perpetrators of domestic abuse.
The areas of counselling that I specialise in are depression, anxiety and relationship problems.I also work with clients who feel angry and struggle to find strategies that enable them to express their anger in appropriate ways.In addition, I am experienced in working with loss, sexual abuse, bereavement and low self-esteem.Many of the above can show themselves in behaviours such as self-harm, disordered eating patterns or suicidal thoughts.
My core training is Psychodynamic Psychotherapy.Briefly translated I believe we are shaped by the conditions, circumstances and the relationships that we have with significant people around us as we grow up.Psychodynamic theory also suggests that some of these patterns of relationship, good or bad, may be repeated in later relationships. Part of my work might involve exploring a client's history to understand the influences from the past that have contributed to the person they are in the present. I have also trained in Solution Focused and Cognitive Behavioural Therapies. These two therapies are useful for providing step by step interventions towards personal goals.Cognitive Behavioural Therapy can also help client recognise the link between negative thought patterns and behaviours. As a therapist I would help the client to explore more positive coping strategies and, by working together, introduce changes that result in the client feeling happier and more in control of their lives.
I believe that the quality of the relationship between counsellor and client is vital in bringing about beneficial change.I take great care to establish a safe and respectful relationship where clients feel enabled to speak about very personal matters without fear of being judged.I am aware that sometimes clients take time to build trust and take great care to ensure that the pace of the work is comfortable and appropriate to everyone.
I am able to see clients in my consulting room at Thorpe Waterville.Thorpe Waterville is quiet village 3 miles from the A14 and within a 20-minute drive of Kettering, Corby, Wellingborough and Peterborough. The consulting room is comfortable, quiet and relaxed with discreet off-road parking.
