About me and my therapy practice
Most people come to counselling when feeling overwhelmed or concerned about feelings of sadness, worry, anger or loneliness. These could be affecting your relationships with others or your ability to work or study properly.
Sometimes people have a sense of what has gone wrong or what needs to be done but find themselves frustrated about why they cannot make these changes. Sometimes it might not be clear at all what the problems or solutions are.
Talking to a counsellor can help you deepen your understanding of yourself and provide a space where feelings and problems can become more manageable. If it is your first time, I will be sensitive to this and open to answering any questions you may have.
In our sessions, you will be listened to with compassion and without judgment. It may take time for you to feel you can talk openly and honestly about your thoughts and feelings, but you can be reassured that whatever you discuss is kept private and confidential. Over time, you are likely to feel more confident in yourself and clearer about ways forward.
My Therapeutic Approach
I can offer an integrative way of working as I am trained in person-centred therapy as well as in more directive and creative therapeutic approaches.
Not every approach works for everybody therefore I will adapt my way of working to help you let out your thoughts and feelings in a way that feels comfortable and productive for you.
However we decide to work together, I will support you to develop your own self-awareness and focus on topics or goals important to you. I will provide you with a space free of criticism and take the time to really get to know you.
I won't tell you how you should feel or what you should do about situations in your life. But at times I may offer resources that can be helpful in deepening your understanding of yourself or your situation as well as choices you can make.
I am a BACP “accredited” counsellor which certifies that I have developed significant skills and experience beyond my original qualification and that I continue to receive a high standard of training and supervision.
Over the past 10 years, I have gained a wealth of experience from providing brief and long-term counselling in schools, youth projects, universities and GP practices. As a result, I am skilled in working with a wide range of issues of varying severity and complexity.
There is no problem too big or too small to be spoken about in counselling however depending on what you hope to gain from the sessions I may suggest you access another type of therapy. If this is the case, I will let you know where you can find this.
Over the years, I have developed expertise in using neuroscience to inform my practice. My approach is underpinned by understanding how our brains respond to stressful events as well as how adverse experiences during childhood and adolescence impact mental and physical health in later life.
My first session
Our first session together will be an initial consultation. This is an opportunity to discuss your issues more fully and where I can help us decide whether the counselling I offer would be helpful for you.
For therapy to work, it is essential that you feel comfortable enough with me to talk honestly and openly about your thoughts and feelings. Therefore the first session also lets you get to know me a little before deciding whether you want us to work together.
During this appointment, you can expect we will briefly discuss both past and present circumstances that may be affecting you now. I will help you figure out what is important for you to talk about as well as what you want to get from our sessions.
I will make sure your counselling is focused on your needs or goals. If either of us don't feel I am the right person to help you with these, I will give you advice on what support might best suit you.
