About me and my therapy practice
My name is Richard King and I am a qualified and accredited Counsellor and Cognitive Behavioural Therapist (CBT).
I have more than 10 years experience working mainly within the NHS primary care sector delivering a range of short term psychological therapies.
I qualified as a counsellor in 2008, before qualifying as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist (CBT) at post graduate level at University in 2017. I am also a qualified as a trauma focused this delivering EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing) treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
I would describe my counselling approach as Person Centred, which is a non authoritative, non judgemental approach to Counselling which gives an individual a safe environment to talk freely and overcome ‘blocks’ which may hinder or prevent emotional fulfilment. Cognitive Behavioural techniques involve understand and identifying how our thinking and behaviour impact on our emotions. Counselling sessions tend to be more led by the client, whilst CBT style is more collaborative and requires the client’s commitment to making agreed changes between sessions to overcome psychological difficulties such as anxiety and depression.
As a private therapist, I am able to offer short and longer term psychological therapies, depending on the requirements of the individual. Our first session will be an opportunity for us to assess you problems, needs and expectations of therapy. It is also an opportunity to see if we both feel comfortable working together before proceeding.
Since the COVID-19 lock-down I have been unable to continue with face to face sessions in the clinical room. However, I am pleased to say that the delivery of online video seasons has proved better than I expected. This is the current standard method of delivery for primary care mental health services in Kent, with no current plans in the short to medium term for returning to the clinic rooms until it is considered safe to practice. These video sessions are conducted by Google Meet (works best with Google Chrome), which is a secure service and offers much greater flexibility for most people. However, this does also require privacy to be established in peoples environments to maintain confidentiality.
I currently have availability on Thursdays and Fridays between the hours of 9:30a.m and 6p.m (last appointment offered at 5p.m)
