About me and my therapy practice
Do you regularly feel anxious, and don’t know why? Are you someone who suffers from periods of depression or low mood, that you find hard to understand and leaves you feeling debilitated? Are you in a relationship where you feel unsupported or unfulfilled?
These are just a few of the reasons why people turn to talking therapies to help them get support and improve their emotional wellbeing and relationships.
I am qualified to practise Transactional Analysis, a theory of psychotherapy which can be helpful in shining a light on areas where people get stuck or feel they are repeating past patterns of behaviour.
For anyone who hasn't had counselling or therapy before, the thought of talking to a complete stranger about something that's troubling you may seem daunting. For much of the time, friends and family can help with day-to-day problems, but like many people you may have come to the point where you feel you need to talk to someone outside your own circle about something that is distressing you or causing you dissatisfaction. You may have an idea of the changes you want to make, or simply know you want something in your life to be different without being sure how to make those changes.
I believe that despite the circumstances that someone may find themselves in, they are able, with support, to think about their situation with a view to making fundamental changes which will ultimately lead to an enhanced and more positive experience of life. In addition, I see support as a collaborative venture - counselling is done ‘with’ you rather than ‘to’ you - and I provide a warm, safe and empathic space where your situation can be explored.
We will work together, at a pace that suits you, to uncover obstacles that may be holding you back. This process will help you develop new ways of responding to life's challenges so you can make better choices to get your needs met.
I work in private practice on the Kent/East Sussex border. For anyone local to Tunbridge Wells, my house is located just off the Forest Road. There is plenty of accessible, free parking in the area, as well as public transport, within easy reach of my home.
The physical space I provide is important for the work and the room we will meet in is used exclusively for my clinical work and is accessible immediately from my front door. It is private and quiet.
My first session
Finding a counsellor that is right for you is a very personal experience and can take time. It’s impossible to really know how well you will get on with someone from a website, so our initial session together is our opportunity to get to know each other. I'll ask you what has brought to you to therapy and you can to talk about the issues that are of concern for you and discuss your needs. There will also be time for you to ask any questions you may have about how I work.
It may be that you don't know exactly what it is that's troubling you at this stage, but have some niggling doubt that something isn't quite right. Talking therapies work because most people find that just by putting a problem into words helps them discover things about themselves they had never before realised. If you talk about something it gets it out into the open, and that helps build awareness and with it healing, acceptance and change. The difference between you talking to a friend and a professional is that the therapist will help facilitate you in this process as you work to have a better understanding of yourself.
If you come to see me for an initial session, it's important that you feel comfortable with the choice you make, and at the end of the initial session you are under no obligation and may choose to see a number of therapists before making up your mind.
After our initial meeting, we still meet at the same agreed time and day each week.
I offer individual short-term counselling – usually between 10 – 12 sessions – and longer-term work. Some people find that they start with short-term counselling and then wish to continue beyond the contracted sessions. This is quite normal. It may be that you are unsure at the beginning just what it is you want to get out of counselling, but simply know that something in your life isn’t working for you right now.
