About me and my therapy practice
My name is Seán and I am a fully qualified and registered BACP Psychotherapist. I gained my Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy at the University of East London having previously completed a Level 3 Certificate in Counselling with City Lit University London.
My counselling is based on an integrative approach, involving Psychodynamic, Person Centred and Existential approaches.
My skills and experience include over 15 years of delivering support services within the social, health, education, community, and voluntary sector and I have extensive experience of working with Social Services & NHS providers and working with diverse groups via my counselling placements with MIND, The Claremont Project, HQ Therapy, and the Everyman Project. I also work as a Place2Be Counsellor in schools, and I have been a Childline counsellor, a bereavement Counsellor with Cruse & Islington Bereavement Service, and an elder befriender.
My counselling work includes working with adults and adolescents experiencing anxiety, depression, self-harm, suicidal thoughts and who are struggling with relationships to themselves & others and finding their place/meaning in the world.
Practice description
I strive to provide a non-judgemental and safe counselling space and my approach is warm, empathetic and utilises different ways of working relative to each client.
This may involve healthily challenging clients to explore aspects of themselves and their lives that can be difficult to look at, but which may be holding them back.
I have a strong belief in empowering clients to bring aspects of themselves and their behaviours into awareness with a view to seeing how these are or aren’t serving them and by examining their option/choices.
I have a natural inclination towards working with people in a person-centred way and helping them to explore issues and giving space to exam and reflect on their emotional regulation, supporting behaviour change and helping them get closer to their self-identified goals.
I believe that the relationship is key, and I work with the client from where they are, helping them to explore feelings, identify patterns and uncover what’s behind these.
I have a desire to support people through a range of life development stages, and to help them navigate personal growth and mental health issues with the ultimate task being "to identify and remove obstacles blocking the path to growth and self-actualisation".
My first session
I can offer a free initial 15 minute phone conversation to discuss further how I work, the issues you wish to explore and to answer any questions you may have.
