About me and my therapy practice
I am a fully qualified Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, working with children and young people aged between 4-18 years old. I offer a friendly, empathic counselling experience, where the relationship with the child / young person is at the centre of the work that we do. I am a child led counsellor, and allow a safe and confidential space with the child / young person to spend time exploring their own issues. My philosophy is that EVERYONE can come to a place in their own lives where they feel OK in their own skin. My aim, when working with children and young people, is to help them recognise the tools that they have within themselves to make meaningful change. I am a fully registered member of the BACP, I am fully insured, have an enhanced DBS and adhere to data protection laws in relation to GDPR.
I use a variety of creative media to help the child / young person to explore their inner world. This may include drawing, painting, clay, puppets, imaginative pretend play, collage, sand tray, story and books, and guided imagery.
I have access to child friendly rooms in the NE42 and NE43 area, and I can also operate virtually during lockdown. Unfortunately the rooms are accessed up stairs so may not be suitable for all people. Both rooms have a waiting room where parents / carers will be asked to wait during the session with their child / young person.
My first session
When you contact me to discuss your requirements for your child / young person, I will explain that our first session will be an assessment meeting between myself and you, the parent / carer. This is to determine if my counselling is suitable for your child, and that questions can be asked and answered. During this meeting, I will outline my safeguarding and confidentiality procedures. This consultation will last 50 minutes. If we agree that counselling is suitable then we'll discuss availability, payment, and getting the first date booked in. During the first session with the child / young person, we will discuss safeguarding, confidentiality as well as what they hope to gain from counselling. If they don't know that's ok. This session is an introduction to each other and is a great way to begin the therapeutic relationship. I offer a minimum of 6 sessions with the child / young person, then we will discuss proceeding with further sessions. In this review meeting, it gives the child / young person the chance to let us know how they are feeling. If it's agreed that counselling sessions are not appropriate to continue we will discuss reasons for this.
