About me and my therapy practice

Hello, I'm Marilyn, and for over 12 years the main focus of my counselling practice has been with adults dealing with childhood trauma experiences.  I am a BACP registered therapist with a diploma in counselling and a diploma in clinical supervision.

My original training was in the person-centred model, and this continues to be the bedrock of my practice. However as you will see below in more detail,  I tailor my work to clients' individual needs.  Compassion for that amazing human will to overcome life's challenges is the driving force in my work.

Alongside my trauma work I have also for many years worked with bereavement and loss in the many forms it presents.

I am Information Commission Office (ICO) registered and follow their guidelines for managing client confidential information, and have a current DBS certificate.

Practice description

As above, my background is in person-centred counselling, but I also recognise that clients as individuals often require specific approaches to meet their needs.  For example, I use creative therapy - frequently working with miniatures - when clients find it difficult to express themselves verbally.  I offer grounding techniques when anxiety makes daily life unmanageable and trauma therapy when past events disrupt life in the here and now.

My first session

Prior to commencing therapy I offer a half-hour telephone meet-up to answer questions and find out if what I offer meets the needs of the enquirer.

In the first session I talk through the contract we make with each other and the importance of knowing how and why this is the best grounding for our work together.  It is the chance for you to ask those things you feel you need to clarify before we begin our journey together.  At the end of that session we will both sign the contract (or make alternative arrangements if working online) and confirm our session time and date for the future.

About me and my therapy practice

I have a diploma in clinical supervision and my supervision practice follows very much the same lines as my counselling.  That is, the bedrock is person-centred, but I tailor the needs of individuals when specifically required.  I use the Page & Wosket Cyclical Model as my guidance to good practiceand like to update my skills regularly.

I offer supervision to trainees and like to remember those early years of my own practice as I support their entry into the world of counselling.

Practice description

For me supervision is very much a collaborative process.   I enjoy experiencing the clients supervisees bring to me and being alongside them as they make their journey together.  I see being a safe pair of hands for supervisees whilst they negotiate that minefield practice can sometimes be is of primary importance.

My first session

I offer an initial free half-hour phone meet-up to enable prospective supervisees to get to know my way of working and find out the way they may wish to work.  For example I offer online (Zoom) or face-to-face sessions or a combination of both when required.

In the first session we contract and I like at that point to find out a little about their caseload or course requirements.
