I work in Glasgow, G3/G11, or remotely via telephone, Zoom, or email.
If I receive a call from an unfamiliar number, I will not return the call unless I have permission to do so in a voicemail or text message. This is to maintain client privacy, as I cannot be sure that the person is in a safe enough space to receive a call. If you contact me via the BACP website I will aim to email you back within a day, and will usually follow that with a text in case the email goes to your spam folder. If you are unable to leave a mobile number as well, then you might need to check spam if you don't receive a response from me.
I believe in making therapy as accessible as possible and so try to keep my fees as low as I can. As far as I can within the limits of my own expenses and availability, I work on a pay as you can basis, and have a suggested sliding scale between £20 and £45.
About me and my therapy practice
I believe that offering an accepting, understanding, and genuine relationship is the foundation for enabling others to grow in their own way and come to self-acceptance. I offer deep, still, spacious listening and acceptance of every feeling, thought, or habit that people bring to me. I am told that I have the ability to make people feel heard and accepted, and to experience their own worth in new ways. I have opened up to my own suffering and pain over the last 20 years, and feel that this gives me a deep capacity to be with the suffering of others, whatever it is. I also have Masters level training in mindfulness, compassion-focused therapy, and bereavement, as well as training in Cognitive Therapy and trauma-informed therapy. I work with anyone from 16, and was a troubled teen and feel that I connect naturally with teenagers and young adults. I welcome people without putting any pressure on them to change, trusting in the potential for each person to find their own path with support. I have a particular passion for work with people who feel excluded, rejected, shamed, isolated, lost, or alone. I welcome people from across the spectrum of identity, regardless of gender, sexuality, race, health, social standing, body, age (16+) etc.
I see people come to therapy with many different concerns. Some feel misunderstood, isolated, rejected, lost, or ashamed. Some struggle with relationships or family. Others with the need to make decisions or change habits or behaviours. For others it's a space to tell and explore their life history, or to process painful experiences and memories. Others need to explore and reconsider beliefs, values, or thought patterns. During therapy, what I see most in clients is growth in freedom and empowerment, new trust in self, deeper self-worth, more ability to communicate in relationships, and more capacity to cope with painful feelings.
Practice description
My professional counselling and psychotherapy training is in the Person-Centred Approach. This means that each session is guided by the communication, experience, and needs of the other person and that my first aim is to meet them with acceptance, understanding, and my own personality. I believe that this compassionate environment enables people to grow and learn to trust in their own power to make decisions for themselves. With most of my clients, I see how powerful it is simply to be able to offer spacious and attentive listening to someone, without judging them or urging them to change. This simple acceptance and understanding is the cornerstone of person-centred therapy, and I see from experience how people can change when they receive it, and how long-term issues can be resolved naturally through this.
The pluralistic side of my practice applies when someone wants or needs more than this reflective, engaged, empathic listening, and seeks a more collaborative and directed approach that develops specific skills or practices, such as addressing self-criticism or intrusive thoughts. I have training at Masters level in mindfulness, self-compassion, and bereavement, and have basic training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Existential Therapy. I am trained in trauma-enhanced practice by the NHS. I am also open to developing my skills and experience to meet the needs of people as they arise in my practice.
My first session
I offer an initial 20-30 minute telephone, zoom, or email consultation, to discuss any questions or concerns that you might have, or review what you are looking for and what I can offer. Normally I begin therapy by offering the space to speak freely for as long as necessary, however many sessions that involves. Research suggests that the development of a trusting therapeutic relationship is the main factor in change. The person-centred approach is based on offering the acceptance, understanding, and genuine presence that enables this relationship to develop. At some point in therapy, the person may ask for something further from me, and the pluralistic side of my practice is also about offering skills, techniques, theories, practices, etc, that offer an alternative possibility of growth.
What I can help with
