About me and my therapy practice
I am trained as an Integrative Humanistic counsellor and psychotherapist which means I integrate the classical psychodynamic theories (Freud, Klein) with the humanistic modalities (Person-Centered, Gestalt) to create a therapy that is specific to you and relevant for your needs.
I have over 20 years experience in health care and wellness, having worked in nursing and care homes, government children services and refuges, as well as community services for adults experiencing mental health problems and with women and families affected by domestic violence.
I am qualified as both a Social Worker and Psychotherapist.
Practice descriptionThe Humanistic approach is based on optimism; the belief that all people are good and have an innate desire to grow. Psychodynamic therapy looks deeply at the past and the unconscious. Both help to understand patterns, habits and ways of thinking that may be impacting your life or your relationships in a way that is stopping you from feeling the way you want or being the person you hope to be.
My first session
Our first sessions together are called the assessment: they give us both the opportunity to consider whether we think we’ll be able to work well together. It is important that you feel comfortable with me, and that I feel I have the right skills and experience to work with the issues you are bringing.
During the assessment I will find out what brings you into therapy at this time and what you are hoping to get out of it. I will also take a thorough life history. As a humanistic-integrative therapist, I am interested in the whole person: body, mind, emotions, relationships, family and social context. Often we find that events and patterns from the past still influence us in the present, even if we don't realize it, and exploring this will be an important part of the work.
Once the assessment is complete, we will decided if we are both comfortable to proceed. If we are, we will move to the main part of the work. We will meet weekly, although we may decide later that more or less often would be more useful. Regularity and continuity are very important to good therapy.
