About me and my therapy practice
I offer private, therapy within a safe, non-judgemental space to discuss your innermost feelings. There are many different reasons for coming to see me and all are valid. I empower and support people through difficult times and to move towards living their best life.
People often say they come to see a therapist because they did not want to feel like they were burdening friends or family with their feelings and that talking with a trained professional resolves this. Many times I have heard people say how they have been told to be strong for others, or to put on a brave face, by friends. These whilst well meaning things to say from friends and family are not helpful when you are experiencing despair, pain, worry, anxiety etc and this is where seeing a trained, qualified, professional therapist like myself comes in. I will empower and support you, should you wish to discuss extremely difficult things, you do not need to worry about it being upsetting to a professional therapist as this is what we train so robustly for and are used to working with distress.
People sometimes come with a problem and aren't sure how they really feel about it at all. I will help you to unravel your feelings, gain greater understanding about your own psychological process and find new positive, life affirming ways to move forward.
I tend to do more long term, deeper level work, however short term is also fine. I work with a myriad of issues and I am particularly, clinically experienced with trauma, have extra training and I have a specialist interest in this area.
My first session
I completely understand that having your first session with a new therapist can feel disconcerting, you might not know what to expect, or what to say, you need not worry about this as the words will come.
You can expect me to put you at ease and talk to you about your reasons for coming and what you feel you might like to work on in therapy and discuss etc in a non-judgemental environment.
If we agree to begin working together we can negotiate for how many sessions, when and what, you are wanting to achieve.
A first session with me is a full hour and is not just about information gathering and history taking but also a real chance for you to engage in a therapy session which enables and empowers you to get a real feel for how it feels to be in therapy with me and how I practice.
In my clinical experience, people do not want to meet me for the first time and just be asked questions on a form. People come to tell their story, whilst hoping they will be genuinely listened to with sincerity, understanding and empathy. I use gentle, skilful questioning which is invaluable and can greatly aid in helping people find hard to reach feelings and thoughts. Therapy is a process and building trust with a new therapist takes time. I will not encourage too much depth too soon and will guide and help you to reveal and discover truths at a careful and safe pace. By the end of the first session you should have a good idea of me as a therapist, and a feel for how I work. At this point there is absolutely no pressure to make another appointment, I believe the individual must want to come to therapy for it to be successful.
