About me and my therapy practice
With over 23 years experience, I have a particular interest in working, via Skype/FaceTime or the telephone, with clients from all over the world or with levels of disability who are unable to visit me in person. I do have very limited face to face slots in my rooms near Exeter in South Devon.
A warm and insightful counsellor, I am dedicated to finding ways of improving the lives of those of you who come to me seeking help.
I believe that counselling truly is your journey of a lifetime, your magical mystery tour. You may come to counselling feeling cornered, restricted and encumbered.
Maybe you feel as if you are living inside a glass bubble; you can see the world outside it but seem unable to communicate in the way you or others want, and feel unable to feel what you or others would like you, to feel about the people and things outside of your bubble. You may feel your head is full of sticky black cobwebs, rendering your brain unable to move at the normal pace.
If you are feeling any of those things, are a survivor of narcissistic parenting or boarding school, are enduring or recovering from coercive control, are struggling to make decisions, are undergoing relationship difficulties or are looking to enjoy a quality of life that seems to elude you, counselling can help you achieve that equilibrium. Yes, it can feel a terrifyingly risky first step. Yes, it can be painful, but there is laughter and humour too - and growth along the way. Given time, patience, and above all courage and trust in yourself, your counsellor and the partnership between you, you really can achieve that.
Type of practice
Because I work largely by phone and internet there is no need to be restricted to any particular area or country unless you are looking for face to face sessions
Training, qualifications & experience
I use Psychodynamic and Person-centred approaches and have had 23 years experience in counselling, with an additional 8 years working in the Mental Health services, enabling me to identify problems which may need additional help from agencies other than from counselling alone.
I started my training in a Person-Centred discipline, over three years, in 1989 and continued with a diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling from 1995 to 1998.
During this period I was working in a Community Mental Health team with other Social Workers, Psychiatrists, Community Psychiatric Nurses and Occupational Therapists where I gained valuable experience of working with people with serious mental illness as well as those with anxiety and depression alongside other professionals in the field.
I have maintained my professional integrity by undertaking Continuing Professional Development training.
I have had and continue to have regular supervision throughout my 23 years as a counsellor.
