About me and my therapy practice

If you are reading this because you are curious or need to see someone as a requirement for your counselling / psychotherapy course, please read on.

As you know, there is no ‘typical’ counsellor or psychotherapist. My advice would be to make an appointment with a practitioner that you think might be right for you and judge for yourself without making any immediate commitments. Although first impressions are important, please do not judge the helpfulness of the counsellor / psychotherapist on that alone. If in doubt, sleep on it and then decide whether or not their style and approach is helpful.

Also please remember that you are in effect ‘hiring’ them, so please request a CV, or ask about experience, accreditation and education.

My work involves getting to know all aspects of you in time, without prying or making judgments. You decide what is good to share. When I sometimes ask questions, it's either to understand your situation better or to help us reflect more deeply.

Working since 1994, I have come to appreciate the complexity of human life. As a result, anything that you allow me to understand about you or explore with you is valued and handled sensitively.

Practice description

My academic training is in psychodynamic and systemic modalities as well as couple therapy.

They help with three major areas: exploring ‘who’ you are and what defines you, appreciating the impact of childhood experiences in adult life and understanding and assisting with better relationships. These areas are over-arching and encompass almost everything else.

Over the years I have acquired a working understanding of how other approaches and perspectives work too by being fortunate to learn from clients or supervisees from other 'modalities'.

I am ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office) registered and comply with the UK Data Protection Act 1998.

My first session

You can book by making a call or emailing me. It would be easier if you can email, because then I have your email address to send you more information.

The first session is as confidential and therapeutic in nature as any other session.

It is an opportunity for you to experience what working with me is like without any obligation to attend more sessions.

This is also where you can ask questions relating to what you are looking for and we can think together about the next step.

About me and my therapy practice

SUPPORTIVE SUPERVISION / CONSULTATION AND COACHING FOR PROFESSIONALS:

If you are a counsellor in training , experienced therapist, supervisor, or work with people and would like support, get in touch.

I am a qualified supervisor, providing online (live video and confidential email) and face-to-face supervision / consultation since 1997, for organisations such as Mind, Relate, Exeter College, Devon County Council, Exeter and Falmouth Universities.

I also provide one to one support for counsellors, psychotherapists and supervisors as well as group workers, project workers, trainers and managers in various professions.

Practice description

Online skills:

I am trained in online therapeutic skills and have been providing supervision via live video and email for over a decade.

Modalities:

My therapeutic work with clients is mainly informed by psychodynamic and systemic (integrative) modalities. However, my supervision training and experience has equipped me to be inclusive and adaptable. Working with people of various professions as well as therapists and supervisors who use other modalities has hugely widened and fine-honed my practice over the years.

Accountability:

I see it as my responsibility to support you and the people in your care.

If you are in training, my responsibility is to help you grow in confidence and develop your own style of working, with a full awareness of the ethical and safety issues that you will face when working with clients. To this end, much of our focus will be on your own personal and professional wellbeing as a learning practitioner.

If you are fully qualified and experienced, I do not intend to teach you how to practise. I see our relationship as colleagues in different roles. My role is to assist you as you continue to nurture your confidence and wellbeing as a practitioner and serve and protect the people in your care (as defined by BACP or equivalent). Your personal wellbeing will continue to be an important component of the work.

Confidentiality:

I am registered with ICO and abide by GDPR 2018.

I keep confidential anything that you share with me about you or the people in your care. My clinical supervisor is included in this confidentiality where appropriate. Otherwise, I need your written consent for any disclosure. Exceptions to this include: if I judge that there is a danger to life, if there is a breach of client safety where immediate action is needed (as defined by BACP or equivalent) or if a disclosure is required by the UK court of law.

My first session

You can book a one-off live video or email appointment (or face to face at safer times if you are local) to find out if you'd like us to work together and discuss how we might go about it.

It is a valuable session in its own right and designed to be helpful to you without any obligations. I charge for this session as normal.
