When you’re looking for therapy, the most important thing is finding a therapist that you click with.
I hope my profile gives you some idea of whether I’m someone you can see yourself working with.
I offer a free initial 15-30 minute zoom call where you can ask any questions and we can both decide whether we think we'd work well together.
About me and my therapy practice
I am currently full and unable to take new clients.
I am currently offering online sessions only.
I’m Ruth. I’m a curious, friendly, open-minded therapist, committed to helping people be kinder to themselves in a world that makes that incredibly difficult.
My Approach to Therapy
I’m a person-centred counsellor. I love this approach to counselling because it’s about respect and good quality, deep conversation. You are the one who has to live in your head 24 hours a day, you know yourself best. I believe that, given some time and the right conditions, you’ll figure out what’s going on for you.
It’s my job to really listen.
I don’t offer my interpretations or explanations of what your thoughts might mean. I don’t have a set of specific tools that I use. Instead, I offer the kind of focussed listening that we rarely experience in our day to day interactions.
I want you to have the chance to have supported, boundaried conversations that are just about you. I want to help you find some real time to take risks, be vulnerable and understand yourself better. No magic solutions, no homework, no judgement; just a chance to talk about the things that are bothering you, get into the difficult stuff and finally say the things you’ve never said out loud.

About Me
I am beyond grateful that hearing people’s stories is my job, and I feel lucky to see the peace that people are able to find through counselling.
I am committed to being myself in the therapy room, and I want to help you to do the same. However you show up to a session is always enough. Laughter, humour, swearing and weirdness have as much value in the therapy room as anything else.
I bring my commitment to social justice to my work as a counsellor. I don’t believe that we can separate our experiences of prejudice and injustice from our individual mental health. Therapy should be a place where you can discuss all aspects of your identity and personal experience without fear of judgement or feeling a responsibility to educate your therapist. It’s my responsibility to be continually learning and thinking about ways to make my practice as inclusive as possible.
I understand how challenging it can be to open up and I’ll do everything I can to create an environment that makes this as easy as possible for you.

I have experience working with clients from 18-90 years old. I have been a psychotherapist in a GP surgery, a university wellbeing service and in private practice. I worked in the charity sector for ten years supporting adults and young people who were experiencing addiction, homelessness, and mental ill health.

What to Expect from Therapy
Therapy is different for everyone. You might be coming to it with something you want to talk about: events from your past that you want to make sense of, a specific relationship in your life that you are finding challenging, you might want to see your current situation through someone else’s eyes.
Or you might just feel, lost, sad, desperate or scared and want someone to help lighten the load.
I can’t promise it will always be easy, but what I can promise is that every session I’ll listen carefully, tell you things that I notice, and give you time to take risks, be vulnerable and to understand yourself better.
Some weeks it might feel messy and chaotic, other weeks it’ll feel like you’ve discovered a new room in your house.
Therapy can be hard; but it can also be eye opening, fun and the rewards can be huge. It can help to make your thoughts clearer; it can help make the process of talking to your friends and loved ones easier; It can reduce your anxiety, depression and stress, improve your self-esteem and ultimately help you to feel calmer, happier and safer.

Abuse, ADD / ADHD, Addictions, AIDS/HIV, Anger management, Anxiety, Autism spectrum, Bereavement, Cancer, Child related issues, Chronic fatigue syndrome / ME, Cultural issues, Depression, Disability, Eating disorders, Health related issues, Identity issues, Infertility, LGBTQ+ counselling, Loss, Menopause, Men's issues, Mood disorder, Obsessions, OCD, Phobias, Post-traumatic stress, Pregnancy related issues, Redundancy, Relationships, Self esteem, Self-harm, Service veterans, Sex-related issues, Sexual identity, Sexuality, Spirituality, Stress, Substance Dependency, Trauma, Women's issues, Work related issues
