About me and my therapy practice

Hello, my name is Ruth Shaw, welcome to my page. As a Humanistic Counsellor, I put the client at the heart of what I offer, and I believe that you are the expert on your life and what your needs are. I will not tell you what to do, but will offer a facilitative space to help you understand more about yourself and the choices you have. It is important to me to offer a safe, confidential and supportive space for you to talk about what matters most to you and to work through the life struggles and personal issues you may be facing in a safe and ethical way.

I graduated from the University of Nottingham with a first-class BA in Humanistic Counselling practice. My training included a detailed focus on bereavement and loss and trauma.

I have experience working therapeutically with children and teenagers within Primary and Secondary School settings. I also have experience working as a bereavement counsellor with children, young people and adults.

I am a member of the BACP, and abide by their ethical framework.

Practice description

Are you feeling overwhelmed in your professional or personal life? Are you anxious, sad/grieving, feel unable to cope? Sometimes it can feel like life is spiralling out of control, but there’s no-one to turn to, no-one you can talk to about your difficult feelings and emotions.

Perhaps you don’t want to burden family or friends, or are afraid people won’t take you seriously, or might judge you or think badly of you?

Counselling is a good place to start working things out; Being able to stand back and calmly explore what’s going on in your life can give you increased clarity and understanding and the tools to begin to take back control.

I would like to offer you that safe space: where we can work together to bring you to the place that you want to be.

I work with a non-judgemental and compassionate approach. I aim to facilitate change and growth, and I believe this occurs as a result of the therapeutic relationship between counsellor and client.

I offer face to face appointments in Radcliffe on Trent, Nottingham (NG12), and also work online to increase my availability.

My first session

Starting therapy may feel a bit daunting, I aim to make the process as comfortable as possible. During our first session, we will talk a bit about what brings you for support and what you hope to achieve. It is also an opportunity for you to ask me any questions you may have and for you to get a sense of whether you would like to work with me.
